    Higher temps in secondary?

Is it acceptable to finish active fermentation in a temperature controlled environment, then when transfering to a secondary allow it to sit at room temp? My wife keeps the house warm, around 76. I just want to be able to free up my fermentor after a month or so.

Priming sugar when bottling off keg?

Hello, My LHBS recommended that I put 2 of the small priming sugar tablets in each bottle when bottling off my keg. He said that in his xp, although already carbed, beer still tends to go flat after a couple days when bottled this way without the tabs. My beer is a hef, so it is already...

    BIAB. Preboil gravity way high...

I am mid brew right now. My preboil gravity is suppose to be 1.036. I chilled to 109 to get a semi accurate reading. My gravity was 1.052... That is before temp adjustment too, so it is even higher. What the hell went wrong?

Dirty Blonde - Did I screw up?

I hope I didn't screw up! This is only my second all grain/BIAB batch, so I am still pretty unfamiliar with my grains. I wanted to make a blonde, but I also wanted to try chocolate malt. Hence the Dirty Blonde! The issue is, I was plugging the recipe into my calculator. When I came to the...

Calculating Hop Weight when AA is different than recipe.

How do you figure out how much hops to use when the AA of your hops does not match the AA of the hops in your recipe? Obviously this is simple in a 1 hop beer. I assume just adjust the weight in your calculator until the final IBU is the same. But what about multi hop beers? My best...

    Losing CO2 quickly...

I just kegged my first batch. My 5lb CO2 tank was at about 900 psi starting out. After 24 hours at 30 psi, with a 7 minute knee rocking at the beginning, I turned the tank off and purged. Repressurized to 12 psi. The tank is now down to about 500 psi... The beer (hefeweizen) is almost...

    Android: Wort homebrew calculator

Hey guys, On my last brew I used a new recipe calculator, and so far it seems to be working great! Wort homebrew calculator It has a very large ingredient database, and allows custom entries for just about everything. I dont know if the other calc do this, but after you enter...

    Left sample in hydrometer glass

I left a sample in the hydrometer vial just out of curiosity. The beer was more than likely on its last day of fermentation. It was 1.020 after 3 days fermenting. 8 hours later, it has dropped down to 1.012. Did fermentation continue in the vial? If so, conceivably, could you pull a...

    Boil covered or not?

Sorry for the newbie questions... Up until now, I have always boiled indoors and uncovered. Mainly, because my old extract setup didn't have a lid, so I had no choice... I had assumed that covering was ideal though to hold in the heat and stop rapid evap. My most recent brew was the...

    IPA hater wants to reform!

I am pretty stuck in my ways, and a picky drinker. So far, I really only like wheats and lagers. Mind you, I was scarred by my first Mr Beer IPA, and never gave any of them another try! I now want to expand my horizons. I have 8 real full scale brews under my belt. I am fermentation...

    Best way to maintain temps?

In my first BIAB brew, I ended the mash 6 degrees lower than my target. What is the best cost efficient way to negate this without scorching the bag? I am on propane btw.

    First hop bag

This last brew I used a hop bag for the first time. Prior I just threw them into the kettle. The bag was handmade from a scrap piece if voile, leftover from my BIAB bag. When I threw them directly into the kettle, they seemed to completely dissolve. Mind you, I am sure they ended up as trub...

    First BIAB Brew. Hefeweizen

Yesterday I brewed my first BIAB using a bunch of new equipment. New to the brew was: 17.5g kettle with spigot and thermometer. Bayou Classic propane burner. Cheap Amazon BIAB bag lined with voile. Voile hop bag. 25' copper immersion chiller. Fermentation fridge with temperature...

    Trouble with pitching temp

I just finished my first BIAB brew. It was a hef, and appeared to go well. I have one issue though. I brewed outside in 85 degree weather. I used my wort chiller for the first time. I stalled at about 115 degrees. I just could not get it any lower without waiting a long time. So I...

    First BIAB hef advise

Hello, I am preparing to brew my first BIAB brew. Here is my recipe for a 5.5g batch. 6 lb Wheat malt 4 lb Pilsner malt 1.7 packs of Wyeast 3056 18g Hallertaur 4.4 AA When I went to buy my ingredients from the LHBS, I found that they didn't have my liquid yeast. They gave me...

    Which Hallertaur?

I am using a brew app, and there are 3 different versions of Hallertaur listed. What is the most common version/alpha rating bought at the LHBS, and more than likely, will they know which one they are selling me?

    Starter budget kettle advise

I have spent way to much lately, but I need to finish out my brew setup. Therefore, budget is important. Please advise on a good kettle with valve and thermometer that wont break the bank. I currently have an 8 gallon, but from what I've read, that wont do for 5g biab. I assume I'll need...

beginning keg for beer & soda

Hello, I am brand new to kegging. I have read up on the basics. What I am unclear of is what is additionally required to hook multiple kegs up to the same co2 tank. I am under the impression that different beers require different amounts of pressure. Also, is it feasible to add an...

Fermentation fridge temperature question. Cheese and lager in the same fridge.

Ok, I have limited funds and space available to me, and two hobbies that require low temperatures. I want to start trying my hand at lagers and cheese making. Ideally, I want to setup one fridge for both with a temperature controller. The issue is that cheese like temps around 50-54 F...
