    Redhook bottles

I'm out of town and stopped to get a six pack. I got redhook with the snub nose bottles. Has anyone tried to cap them? Wasn't sure if the double lever capper would work on the short neck.

    Smoke Amber Ale

I made a batch of the subject kit from NB. If anyone in the Asheboro, NC area is interested...you can have it. I found out I'm not much of a fan of smoke.

    smoked amber ale

Drinking my first smoked beer that I brewed a couple months ago. Definitely for sipping, not gulping. The smoke flavor is pretty overpowering. Also my first partial mash.

    priming sugar and beer temperature

I cold crashed a beer before I bottle it which I would normally do before kegging, but this is the first time with bottling. There is an input in the calculators for temperature and I know co2 is absorbed faster at lower temps, but what if I plan to bring it back to 70 to carb/condition...

    Mash tun build

Does a 5 gallon water cooler converted to mash tun typically have enough capacity to do 5 gallon all grain batches? I guess it would be 10-15 pounds of grain and 3-4 gallons of water. Seems like it would be too close for comfort.

    NB chocolate milk stout

This post is dual purpose, informational and a question. I brewed the subject extract kit, 2 weeks in primary, transferred to secondary to add cocoa nibs and left for 4 weeks in secondary. Bottled with 3.3 oz of priming sugar to get close to style. After transferring to secondary it developed...

    infection

I'm pretty much positive I have a lacto infection in my chocolate milk stout. Thin film on top with tiny white balls after a move to secondary glass carboy and adding cocoa nibs. There are no bad smells and it tastes good so I'm gonna bottle in a couple days and hope for the best. I'm not sure...

    underfilled bottles

Is it my imagination or does an underfilled bottle result in overcarbed beer? I know you should top off, but not when I bottled this batch.

    Slow start wl500 trappist

Brewed my first nonkit extract batch Saturday night, 3 gallons of water at start, 3lb specialty grain, .5lb of 6 different grains steeped 45 minutes, 5lb extra pale dme, 2/3 oz willamette for 90 min, .5 oz fuggles for 20 min and .5 oz fuggles for 0 min. I had 2 gallons of water in the freezer...

    rapidly losing co2

I kegged for the first time 3 weeks ago in a 5 gallon corny ball lock using a 4lb tank. I went to get a beer tonight and nothing came out when I pulled the tap handle. I looked in the fridge where the tank is and the regulator showed the tank to be empty. Luckily I have a 5lb as well so I hooked...

    3rd batch brewed, 1st kegged

I have had my nb phat tyre set and trying to forget for 2 weeks, so installed my kegerator equipment and gave it a test. Three pints later I was happy as a pig in a mud hole. It tastes great and pours really well.

    terrible tragedy

I came home from work today excited to check on my two batches I had fermenting. Opened the basement door and headed down. About three steps down I smelled beer, uh oh. I raced around the corner and there lies one of the fermenters on the floor. I brewed the second batch last night and sat them...

    priming with honey

I bottled/kegged an NB phat tyre last night. Bottled 13 and kegged the rest. For my priming solution I heated one cup of water in a jar and mixed in about 3.5 Tbsp of honey. Any predictions how the bottles might turn out? I thought since I was bottling so few it was a good time to try something...

    weekend plans

I've got a brew-filled weekend planned. Kegging NB phat tyre...first time kegging. And brewing NB Chinook IPA and Farmhouse Biere de Table. What's everyone else got going on brew wise?

    NB phat tyre

I just took a hydrometer reading off the subject kit I brewed 3 weeks ago tomorrow. I'm doing primary only and just for another data point, it is crystal clear. I'm gonna keg tomorrow or Saturday assuming fg holds which it should. It's at 1.007 now.

    labels left on bottles

While this is definitely not advisable, I will share anyway. On my first batch, not knowing any better, I left the labels on my bottles. They were stuck on so good they did not peel off when I washed them or when I soaked them in star san. Anyway, there were no adverse effects to the beer. I...

kegerator - taps on door or side?

I have all the stuff to convert a top freezer refrigerator I bought on Craigslist to a kegerator, but I can't decide whether to put the taps on the front of the door or the side of the fridge. Any opinions? I wonder if I put them on the door if they will get in the way. It will be a 2 tap...

    Praise for NB

I've only done a few kits but so far I'm very impressed with northern brewer's kits. They seem very well put together with quality products and easy/complete instructions. Also, their prices seem very reasonable. Shipping is very good too, $7.99 and I usually have my stuff in 3 days in North...

    I can make good beer!!

On my first batch, I really struggled mostly getting used to the process and my equipment. However, I have been letting friends try it and getting rave reviews. One of my friends even did a blind taste test on his wife between mine and a well known, established brewery of the same style...
