Does a 5 gallon water cooler converted to mash tun typically have enough capacity to do 5 gallon all grain batches? I guess it would be 10-15 pounds of grain and 3-4 gallons of water. Seems like it would be too close for comfort.

I have a ten gallon drink cooler for my tun. I sometimes fill it at least half way so i would say that a 5 gallon is limiting. If you want to do big beers you should go bigger. I have heard the figure of 1.050 or less.

See my build HERE.. this is a 25 Qt. which is a bit over 6 gallons. I think it'll work for normal 5 gallon brews.. but, I don't intend on brewing "big" beers.. so, it'll work great for me. Most of my beers will be 2.5 to 3 gallons.
