    Questions of Pressure Fermentation

Not sure if there is a special section for questions of fermenting under pressure (if so please let me know to post there). Looks like my spunding valves got clogged up in my first few efforts for fermenting under pressure in 5 gallon corney kegs so the beer pressure climbed to the 20-25 psi...

Looking for input on Imperial stout ingredients

I would like to brew some different all grain recipes of imperial stouts over the winter to give away next year or the year after and I would like to know which specialty grain combinations might give the stout a more complex lingering taste than just using one or two specialty malts. I have...

Scorched extract addition in my stout.

Brewed 10 gallons of a 1065 all grain oatmeal stout today where I had to add in about 1 lb of dark LME to reach the gravity needed. Turns out that I did not get this mixed up well enough and a small amount scorched at the bottom of my keggle. Not sure of what to expect with the results. Any...

Using yeast K1V-1116 to help finish high gravity stouts

Has anyone used the wine yeast strain k1V-116 to try to finish off fermentation of a high gravity imperial stout? I read in an article that this strain can be used to help finish fermentation of high gravity stouts that seem to get stuck. About 5-6 paragraphs into the article posting below...

Types basemalt in higher gravity stouts

Does the type of base malt in a Russian Imperial Stout matter? Looking to make a RIS and I wanted to know if I could just add several lbs of different base malts (2-row, pale malt, Vienna, Munich, 6-row, Maris Otter and wheat). I have 4-5 extra lbs of all of these but not enough of a single one...

Trying to fix an old burner.

Looking to try to fix a buddy's old burner. It has a small hole to release the propane through and this runs very hard/strong. Either a soft yellow flame or one that sounds like a jet engine. Does anyone have any ideas on what I might be able to do to fix this or if it even can be fixed. Thanks.

Using old extract for yeast starter

I found an old can of Pilsen extract with a use best buy date of 2010. I know this would be worthless for brewing a batch of beer but does anyone think I could use this for making a large batch of yeast starter? Thanks

Looking for a cross version of this copper T connector.

I am looking to build a copper manifold for a very large mashtun. Does anyone know if they make a 4 piece version of this 3/4 inch T joint? This would be a cross shaped piece instead of a T.

Is stacking two vertical smokers possible?

I recently got two vertical smokers off of Craig's list. I have put about $30 total into them and would like to know if it is possible to smoke food with good results using two of the charcoal smokers stacked on each other. These are charcoal but I can put one of my propane burners under them if...

How much hops is too much for a fresh hop ale?

OK....how much hops is too much hops when making a fresh hop/wet hop ale? I have three plants cascade, centennial and chinook that have intertwined and I picked 34 oz of fresh hops in order to make a wet hop ale? Is this overboard for doing a 5 gallon IPA as a wet hop? I have read that 4-5 oz...

    Possible heat damage to hops.

We have endured a heat wave the last 2 weeks with very bright sunshine. 10 days ago I suffered a transient ischemic attack (mini-stroke) and just today I made it out to inspect my hops to find many of the cones looking like this. Can I assume that cones looking like these are too far gone to...

I have a Wyeast 1010 American Wheat yeast starter about a month ago using a 2 liter flask and a foam stopper. After being on the stir plate for a day I pulled it off and placed it in my yeast fridge and forgot about it until today. Should I toss it out or use it? If I had a sealed glass...
