    "Selling" home-brew

I received a canning machine as a Christmas gift and was going to can a couple different beers. I know I can't outright sell to the public but are there ways to "sell" to friends? Memberships? Donations?

    Jockey Box issue

I have a jockey box with two taps on it that I built. Most of the time when I use it for events the one tap seems to foam up a good portion of the time. Other tap is fine. I have tried 3 different taps and still the same result. Any thoughts? Could this be a piece of equipment, a shank, a...

    Water Test Results

Any thoughts on the following water report? I have been brewing for 5 years now and would like to make some incremental improvements in my beers as well as expand my brewing knowledge. pH 7.2 Sodium 19 Potassium 2 Calcium 21 Magnesium 7 Total Hardness 82 Sulfate 7 Chlorine 43...

    Best System for Beginners

My father is interested in starting to brew and has asked me to do some research on what would be best for him. At his age, he does not want to do a lot of heavy lifting so I was thinking of some all in one systems or kettle/mash/HLT with separate conical fermentor. Any thoughts or suggestions?

    Brewing Thermometer inaccurate

I have been using this thermometer for 12-18 batches, thinking that is was only having difficulty reading high temps ( during the boil). It would begin to boil around 225. Tonight I realized it is inaccurate all the time, during chilling, reaching mass temp etc. My batches have turned out...

    Mash Efficiency

Last half dozen or so brews I have had a poor efficiency after mashing and sparking. I have had to add anywhere from a half pound of DME to today where I had to add 1.5 lbs. I haven't changed any procedures. The only thing I have done is starting buying my 2 row in bulk so it have been...

    hop rhizomes for sale

I have 4 hop rhizomes for sale; Nugget (3-4 yo), Willamette (2-3yo), Glacier (2-3yo) and Mt. Hood (2-3 yo). I will be digging these up towards the end of March. I am asking $20 for the lot plus any shipping and handling.

    Brett Blow off

I am currently fermenting a beer with Brett. It had a very strong fermentation the first couple days and blew the bubbler off. There was crud in the fermentation chamber. Could this lead to possible contamination of other beers that I will be fermenting in the same chamber? What if anything...

    Serving a Sour

I am getting to keg a sour that was brewed last september. My question is related to the equipment. After I tap this, should I buy new o-rings, dispensing line, etc due to the yeast so that I don't infect a regular batch with the Brett?

    Strike Water Temp Issues

I had to buy a new thermometer a couple of batches ago and ever brew session since I reach the target strike water temp, pour it into the cooler, stir the grains, and the mash temp is 4-6 degrees higher than target mash temp. This rarely happened with the old thermometer. The old thermometer...

    Bourbon Barrel Question

I bought a small 2 L barrel about 3-4 months ago. I had a large batch of brown ale so I took some and filled the barrel. About a month ago I tool a sample, it had a nice brown flavor as well as a good bourbon taste. I sampled it again today, and it tastes/smells like nail polish. Any...

    Scottish Ale fermentation question

I am currently fermenting a Scottish ale that had a starting gravity of 1.104. After 3 weeks it is down to 1.030, with a little activity left. The beer is still heavy and thick. Do I let it ferment longer, or transfer it to a secondary and add another yeast, or transfer it to a secondary and...

    DIY Fermentation Chamber vs Freezer

I am wanting to do my primary fermentation at 68 degrees for a week then do secondary fermentation at 55 degrees or lower for a week or so. I have a DIY chamber that I am currently not using and a chest freezer that I am. Which one would be better for the higher / lower temperature? During...

    Kolsch Question

I brewed a Kolsch and fermented in the primary for two weeks at 60 degrees. Moved to secondary and am currently fermenting at 40 degrees. My question is when I go to carbonate it in the keg what temp should I keep the keg at?

    Missing Target Gravity

I read the article posted on here and it was very helpful. However, I wanted to post this just to see if anyone had any thoughts. For my last batch, target gravity was 1.053 and 75% efficiency. My pre boil OG was 1.036 which I thought was not bad (I had calculated that i needed a 1.040 ish in...

    Hitting Target Gravity

Last couple of times brewing I have overshot my target gravity. I will take a reading with a refractometer prior to boil. I have been low so I calculated out how much DME I needed to add in order to be at target after the boil. However, each time I have been a good 5-10 gravity points over...

    Chest Freezer Temp Control issues

Bought a chest freezer to replace the fermentation chamber I had built. I am having trouble keeping the temp at a nice steady temp. I have the temp set to 19 C with a .5 degree difference. The freezer kicks on at 19.5 and sends it all the way down 18 if no heater is turned on. If the heater...

    Home Brew competition question

I just received my scoresheets back from a recent competition. I received what I thought were fair scores for the beers I entered. However, both beers received lower scores because of their extreme carbonation levels. Both beers were listed as "gushers" and "severely over-carbonated". I...

    Mash Efficiency ?

I brewed a Wit last spring that was suppose to have an OG of 1.050. It ended up at 1.044 but was very good none the less. My question is do I adjust the recipe to have it at 1.044 or do I keep it the same and adjust later?

Kegged Beer / Change in taste

I have noticed with my kegged homebrew that the first 15 beers I pour are generally ok, some cloudiness. The next 30 or so beers start tasting better, clarity is much improved. Then the final 1o beers are much more flavorful, sometimes more than enough. Has anyone else noticed this? What...
