No winners, Good feedback on the two I entered, first time brew/recipes on both so I wasn't expecting them to do amazing but glad I gave it a shot.

Cost of grains (not in bulk)

Usually base grains are $1.00 to 1.50 at most per pound, at my store. Specialty grains ive used still run below $2 a pound. 3$ a pound is ridiculous sounding and indeed kills a major benefit from going all grain.

    2015 Michigan Beer Cup

Have some family in the area for the weekend so I don't think I'd be able to sadly. And thanks for the info, not really that antsy about it, just first competition and wanted to avoid checking the website daily.

    2015 Michigan Beer Cup

Any ideas/estimation of when scores come back? Does anyone who entered in previous years know if they post to the website?

Keezer running almost 24/7 and compressor very hot

Where is your temp probe in the keezer? Is it in a liquid? Do you use a fan to move the air around in the keezer? Do you notice a large difference in temp between the top of the keezer and the air in the bottom?

How to keep beer glassware from condensating (for photos)?

agreed with the let the beer warm, then after the brew has warmed up, top it off with a quick turbulent pour to get the head back for the photo.

Went ahead and brewed the centennial blonde, thanks for all the suggestions. Still considering starting a quick draft style cider this week though.

    Picnic brew

I think this sounds perfect, without reading through all the pages, does anyone know if there are any changes/updates to the recipe I should be aware of?

    Picnic brew

Got asked if I would consider brewing up a summer company beer and hoping you guys could throw some ideas out there to help me out. Im trying to please the general beer drinker, so looking to avoid anything too hoppy, dark, etc... Also, thinking of making a few gallons of cider quick for...

    2015 Michigan Beer Cup

Well good luck to everyone! This is my first competition, planning for the deadline added some stress because of timing issues that kind of detracted from the overall enjoyment of brewing, but it was enjoyable to brew more to style as well.

Yeah, I entered for the feedback portion really, if either placed would be pretty happy with that though too.

    2015 Michigan Beer Cup

So the deadline has passed, any other entrants? I put two in, then for extra pizazz I put gold coins in my bottles... see if I can't bribe my way to a win!

    PVC for a Trellis?

Something to consider is if the plants can get enough of a grip to climb the smooth pvc pipe? No experience with pvc and hops so just throwing this out there, may not be an actual issue. Edit: sorry re read your post, sounds like you are only using the pvc to build a structure to attach the...

Is Extract not as good as BIAB or all grain?

It is still some "costs" over just extract. Others need to buy a new large kettle to accommodate the BIAB. Maybe a few other things you would want to have on hand doing AG or BIAB that you wouldn't worry so much about when just doing extract.

Is Extract not as good as BIAB or all grain?

I enjoy the cost savings as well but when you figure in the cost of a AG or BIAB rig it may not add up to what some people expect. The biggest thing for me personally is the ability to dial recipes in. With extract your stuck with their ratio's, fermentability, etc... AG you can mash at...

Using not quite ripe berries for a sour

Makes sense there isn't much a difference in acid content, just the ripening adds more sugar to balance against the tartness in them. Other than not being sweet, they are good just before being ripe. I think that's personal preference though, like when is a banana best to eat. I definitely...

Using not quite ripe berries for a sour

Very possible, I guess I was more wondering if fruit contained anything before ripening that would be detrimental to the brew? And if it was possible to get some extra tartness from adding less than ripe berries?

Using not quite ripe berries for a sour

So my next problem may be not having enough lbs to add to the brew, I wonder if subbing a lil bit of not so ripe would go a long way in adding the tartness, along with adding as many ripe blackberries as I can keep myself from eating. ha.
