Anvil Foundry 6.5 - High FG

So I got myself an Anvil Foundry 6.5, and after four batches, I'm still getting high finishing gravity. My typical mash temp is in the 150F range, and with the exception of the last batch, I typically don't do a mashout. Next batch I intend to do a comparison of the temperature probe vs an...

    Grainfather connect

Is there any reason why the Grainfather Connect controller couldn't be used on a non-Grainfather unit? Currently, the only thing I need to convert to electric, is an element and a controller. If l look at the bottom of the controller, it is hard wired for power, and a temperature probe. There...

    First yeast harvest

So, I brewed an English Sparkling Ale about 10 days ago using Arset Kveik, and harvested the slurry. To my eye, the trub and the yeast appear the same colour, so I don't have that nice pale portion so many examples show. I intend to do an IPA this week, and I'm wondering if I just pitch say...

Pails vs Carboys and 1 vs 2 stage

I've been brewing for a while now, and I have always used a plastic pail for primary fermentation, and glass carboys for secondary. Lately I've noticed that as I drive around the net, many brewers go straight to glass, and don't rack to secondary. What's the prevailing opinion?

    Brain transplant

For anyone who's well versed in the Robobrew, is it possible to give this device a brain transplant? I'm thinking that an RPi would be a logical choice.

    SoFC build

I needed to build a fermentation chamber this weekend, and settled on a SoFC made of pink foam. Because my brewery is located very near my HVAC, I have a problem with high temps in the winter, and low temps in the summer. I think this will solve that problem. This spring when I can get back out...

    Small batch kegging options

I typically make 23L batches, and then transfer into 19L kegs. The remaining 4L I will naturally carbonate in bottles. Instead of going this route, I figure I could get a small keg and that would solve the issue. In addition, I could use it for small batch experimental or seasonal brews. What...

    Stabilizing a cider

I recently brewed a 4L batch of cider from the following recipe: 1 can frozen concentrate 1L box juice 3L fresh pressed cider Mangrove Jack M02 cider yeast OG 1.054 FG 1.015 I was going to back sweeten it with another can of concentrate, but for whatever reason I can't find any, so I'm going...

    Drilling Kettles

I'm building a one vessel electric system, and I need to drill several holes in my brand new stainless pot to hand the element and other fittings. I have read that a radio punch is the best tool for the job, but at over $100 for a single use tool, that somehow feels too expensive. The other...

Ready to build - I think...

As a companion posting to my topic in the automated brewing board, I've designed what I hope is a functional single vessel system. My original plan is to use parts that allow for easy upgrading in the future from 120v to 240v when I have an available source. I plan to use a 4500w element at 120v...

    Water requirements

I'm starting out in the BIAB world after being an extract with grains brewer for a long time. I've got a recipe developed (posted below), but I'm having some challenges figuring out my water needs. My equipment is minimal at this point, I have a sous vide wand for mashing, and an 18L (5 gal) pot...

    Recipe help

I purchased a Best Case Belgian Farmhouse Saison kit, and while looking at the recipe, it strikes me that there's not enough hops to keep this in style. When I run it through the various calculators, I get about 9.7 IBU. It's an 11L (3gal) partial boil kit. here's the recipe: 300g Munich Malt...

    Steeping Adjuncts

Just getting into GF brewing for my wife who is celiac. What grains are people using to impart colour and depth of flavour? Are you roasting these at home? I can get quinoa and GF oats, and I may be able to get buckwheat at my local bulk foods.

    New GF brewer

My wife is celiac and can't drink regular beer. Yesterday she tried a Bard's and really liked it, so she asked me to make something similar. I was thinking of starting with a 5 litre test batch. I have 600gm of brown rice syrup and can get buckwheat honey. With some gentle hopping would this...

    Yeast freezing

Liquid yeast is stupid expensive where I live... $12.99 pk for Wyeast. So today I'm at my LHBS and I see it on for $8.00 pk. I'd like to get 2 or 3 types and divide them out for freezing to drive down the overall cost. Is this feasible, and if so, what's the best way to do this.

    Chiller idea

I find myself in the market for a new wort chiller. While thinking about what to make, I stumbled upon the idea of a rib cage design chiller. Taking the idea one step further, it struck me that you could make two circuits from that same design, connected at the input and output by a T fitting...

    Irish Red

I'm looking to put something together for St Patrick's day. Given that it's a month away, I should have just enough time. I saw the following recipe on the web, and I'm interested to give it a go. 1.7kg Coopers Real Ale kit 500gms Dry Malt Extract 100gms Maltodextrin 100gms Crystal Malt...

    Smoked Porter

Hey folks, I have a mind to make what I call a Smoked Porter. I have a Cooper's Bitter kit, 1kg of liquid LME, 250gm chocolate malt, and 500gm peated malt, and some Wilamette hops. I'm eager to hear your suggestions on how much of the peated malt to add. I figure 250gm should make it smokey...

    Black Currant Cider

Hi folks, Well, I have my first successful batch of cider done and I'm looking for more. I'm thinking of making a black currant cider from Ribena. I can't get any currant juice or pulp here, so Ribena's the only choice. I understand that there's 175ppm of Sorbate in the concentrate. If I...

Welch's White + fruit (and other questions)

Hey gang... I just finished making a batch of Welch's white with EC-1118 as the yeast, which turned out great. I'm curious to know that if I used two cans of concentrate with some fruit and water, how much fruit would I need per 1 gallon batch? Would two cans be too much? I'm interested in...
