How do I seal a camco element into a tri-clover housing?

Hi All, I'm at the stage in my electric brewery build where I need to test the elements however I'm not clear on the correct/safe way to fit one to the housing. - I assume I use thread tape? - What about sealant? - Do I use the black rubber seal? I found this link which might be...

Not much brewing but I have been building this

Just need a label printer.. Still a way to go though. Need to make element cables up - i'm using SS tri-clamp element housings. Also need to get fittings installed/welded into the pots for the probes, elements and herms coil/pump. One day I'll get it finished.. maybe even before Xmas!

Fermentation slow to start, should I be worried?

Made a starter without nutrient. White labs 001 in 1.5 starter with 150g dme. I also oxygenated the dme with pure O2 for about 5 secs. Then straight onto stirrer plate. Both wort and yeast were at room temp. Pitched starter 16 hours ago in to 1.066. that was 20deg c. And was aerated with pure...

    Nutrient to starter AND boil?

Hi, It's probably an easy one but.. I've entered the world of yeast starters and wondering if I add nutrients to the starter would I not need to add it to the boil? or perhaps it makes no difference if I do..? Cheers

Does this look like Brett contamination?

I'm now up to 6 all grain batches. All of which taste bad :( Some still drinkable but this last batch is not. I have no experience tasting off flavours but my mate who brews reckoned it tasted bitter/sour/just plain awful and smelt bad too. I dropped in to a brew pub yesterday to drink some...

    Mysterious miscellaneous losses

At the beginning of yesterdays boil there was 30.7L in the boiler, at flame out (60min boil) there was 25L. I attach a site gauge to the boiler and begin lautering (fly sparge) and stopped when the boiler had 30.7L in it. Closed the valve, emptied the site gauge and boil for 60 mins. At flame...

Is 68% attenuation anything to worry about?

    I'm brewing the epic pale ale clone. The OG was .051 and today after 12 days in the fermenter its .016. Its in a temp controlled fridge with heat pad. I usually get %80+ 6 kg Gladfields Pale Ale 36 2.62 80% 750 g Light Crystal 23L 34 23 10% 500 g Pale Crystal 40L 34 40 6.7% 250 g German -...

    MM2 .045" crush - look ok?

I have just run the mill for the first time. I set the gap to .045 which is the factory setting - i had to set the gap myself as the unit came apart during shipping. Does this look ok?

Add 4g Calcium chrolride and 4 of gypsum?

Based on this chart and after plugging the numbers into the Palmer residual alkalinity spreadsheet (found here) I deduced I should/would/could add 4 gr of calcium chrolride and 4 of calcium sulphate (gypsum) to 18L of mash water to brew the EPIC pale ale clone - EBC 18, SRM 9.4) Any thoughts...

    Watch out for STC-1000 knock-offs

Unfortunately I ordered 2 of these on ebay without inspecting the images. I wasn't aware of knock-offs that look almost identical. In some cases (like mine) they are listed as being a STC-1000. The difference is the knock-off can only switch on/off one system (heat or cool). That is.. you...

Anyone feel like doing a sticky on grain crush?

My MM2 is due any day now so have been trying to find pictures that define a 'good looking crush'. I inspected the last crush from my LHBS and there were quite a lot of husks cracked/opened but not separated from the endosperm (sorry wished I'd take a picture for reference). I know there are...

Will this sparge arm work for fly sparging?

I had this sparge arm made. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/photo/sparge-arm-62865.html The picture here shows it after the mashtun was drained but the way I use it is.. Once I've doughed in I select a length of tube so the plate is at the same as the wort level (I have several lengths of...

Why is my efficiency so low?

My latest brew (my 3rd brew ever) only yielded 53% (brewers friend) efficiency which I feel is low considering my brewing system. When I say low I'm referring to the OG. OG for the lastest brew was .050, at 65% I'd be hitting .061. I have 3 keg system. Mashtun has a pico false bottom...

    Brew day now immenent

Hi, 3 months after buying a second hand keg I'm nearly there.. Plan is to do full volume mash's to negate the need for sparging - which of course means I don't have to make a hot liquor kettle to get started :mug: To say I'm looking forward to actually brewing something would be the...
