    Carbonation drops and such

Ah. I should've looked at their site a bit more. This might work for me. Looking for about 2-2.2 carbs in 22oz. Bottles so 3 capsules might do the trick. Thanks for pointing out their documentation.

    Carbonation drops and such

Looking at trying one of these products like Prime Dose or the inexpensive fizz drops at NB. My question is, does it somehow magically, properly carb for all beer styles or is it just a general carbonation good for most american ales? I've brewed a batch of special bitter which has a moderate...

    Black peppercorn??

I agree. Pepper in certain beers tastes good. I brewed a Odell's Myrcenary-ish IIPA and used a bit of Chinook among numerous other hops, at 20 mins... what I got before bottle carbing was this overwhelmingly peppery beer. I thought... Whoa. That tastes awesome in conjunction with all the...

Apple Ale Recipe - Methods, etc

Okay. So Ive tried Redds Apple Ale and... meh... I'd like to make something a little more Ale-like but still full of apple flavor. Heres what Ive come up with and I have a couple questions... Going to brew a 2 gal. batch of a really basic ale with 3lb. Extra Light DME .5 oz of New...

Taste testing from a flip top bottle

Hello all and happy holidays. A question about taste testing... I was thinking about getting a couple flip top bottles and popping one open throughout the bottle aging process to check progress. Does this kill the beer in the bottle by oxygenating or does it kill the carbonation? Or any...

    Straining wort into carboy

The judgmental Dougie Downer of an employee at my LHBS had a meltdown when I told him I did this with my last batch. He insisted it infected/tainted the wort... Anyone see any problems with doing this? After cooling my wort, I take a muslin bag, drape it over my funnel and let the wort siphon...

    Apartment ferm temps

Nope. Not submerged at all. I put a small metal storage rack underneath the carboy and fill the water just up to the bottom of the carboy. It's also a lot less maintenance doing it this way. I don't have to mess with ice jugs or anything like that. Set it up and forget about it but check the...

    Apartment ferm temps

I tried full submersion, partial submersion and having the carboy above water level. Having it above was far more effective. I figure its because having it underwater nullifies the cooling effect of the fan.

    Apartment ferm temps

My experience with the T-shirt/bath/fan was more than sufficient. My apt was a constant 75F. My wort temp dipped as low as 66F with the fan on high. By turning the fan on low it hovered around 68. With the fan off it went to 71/72F. The mistake a lot of people make is letting the fermenter sit...

    Boiloff vs. OG

It's cool. That's what the forums are all about. In looking for answers we can often help others with questions related to our own. Let me start by saying, If you haven't bought Beersmith yet, I highly recommend it. It does have some minor calculation issues but they all have work arounds...

    Boiloff vs. OG

Hi. I just brewed a 2.5gal. batch of an IIPA. This is my first time using brewing software. Using Beersmith 2.1. I've always winged it in the past and my beers have been drinkable but nothing spectacular. Never have I hit my OG so I know my personal calcs. have been wrong. This is also...

    Hops Schedule for IIPA

    bump... anyone have any advice?

    Hops Schedule for IIPA

Okay, so I'm building a recipe for an IIPA based of the tiny amount of info I could find on Odell's Myrcenary Double IPA. My base grains and specialty grains are already purchased but I'm still tinkering with the hops schedule and would like some input on it. The hops I have to work with are...

    fermentation temp/beer temp?

So yesterday I brewed a 2.5 gal. Batch of chocolate stout using DanStar Windsor yeast. I may have over pitched by about 10 to 15 percent which I don't think is a big deal but I have a question about the fermentation temperature of the beer itself. I'm fermenting in a regulated fermentation...

Batch of bottles - mouths too small for bottle brush

Anyone run into this? Bought 2 cases of new bottles from a local homebrew shop. I was impressed with the weight and quality of the bottles... until after using them once and going to clean them. The extra thickness of the glass makes the mouths of these bottles too small for my bottle...

    Hop bag in primary. Problem?

I used hop bags for this last batch and decided to put the last hop addition from the boil into the carboy to hopefully add some flavor. Does anyone see a problem with that? Any possibility of the hop bag creating bacteria? It was the last hop addition to the boil and it boiled for 15 minutes.

Fast Fermentation using Safale 04 - Too Fast?

So last sunday I brewed a 2.5 gal. batch of Irish Red with the grain bill below, using a half a pack of Safale 04. Unfortunately I forgot to take an OG reading so I have no clue what the ABV is now. Target calcuated gravities were OG 1.056 and FG 1.015. ABV of 5.37. Tonight - Wednesday -...

    Kolsch yeast fermentation time dilemma

So you're saying skip the secondary? Just ferment in the primary until I get back on the 27th and then check the FG and bottle?

    Kolsch yeast fermentation time dilemma

Well I think I've gotten myself in a bind... My intent was to make a Oktoberfest-ish Ale and have it drinkable by the time my brother visits for Christmas. The catch... I'm leaving for Chicago on Nov. 21 and will be back on Nov. 27th. I brewed and began fermenting yesterday (Nov. 11) On a...

Mold Grows In My Fermentation Chamber

I Just set up a small fridge with the A419 controller and would like to avoid this problem. What do you all think about using a few large silica gel packs; the kind used when you get items shipped to you?
