    Wheat beer off taste

I like wheat beers, but mine seem to have an off taste. I do all grain, and my efficiency has gone up alot since I stared maybe two years ago. Used to add a little extra base malt, but not anymore, and I still get higher efficiency. I grind my own grain, and for the wheat I do a double to...

Looking for recipie using 3068 yeast

Just did Bee Cave Bavarian Hefe, and did my first yeast washing. So now I'm looking for recipes to use. Only thing I thought of so far was using the original recipe and adding either orange and coriander or fruit. Any ideas? I thought I saw a hacker pschorr dunkle clone with this yeast.

    Fresh strawberries, questions

My family just picked 32 quarts of strawberries today at the local strawberry farm. My wife is making lots of jam, some bread, and freezing some. Ive never done a fruit beer yet, and if I wanted to use some strawberries, what do I have to do? Do I wash and freeze them whole, and is it worth...

    Old yeasts?

I have had some really slow fermenting beers, some have been taking 24 hours to see activity. I just did a Centennial Ale on Friday, 48 hours ago, no activity. I have been thinking its just the temp, my basement is about 60 degrees, and the carboys and buckets sit directly on the concrete...

    newb to freshhops

Been brewing AG for a little overa year now, and a guy at work told me he has fresh hops ready, and I just picked about a gallon. They are wilmette and sterling. I will be drying them in a paper bag I guess, dont have a screen. Now what kind of beer would go with them, as they are mixed? I...

Planning ahead, Christmas is only 5 months away

Looking thru the recipies, and need to plan ahead better this year. Brewed Holly Christmas Ale last year, a little too green at the holidays. I don't think I can brew them all, but I have started a wish list. I currently have bottled an amber ale, black IPA, in secondaries Lemon-Lime...

    All grain efficiency help?

Brewed Lemon Lime Hefe Weizen today, but messed up on volume and target OG. 11.25 lbs grain in recipe, I batched sparged with 4 gallons , 1st runnoffs getting me 1.063 gravity, 2nd batch sparge 3.25 gallons at 1.025, and had to add 1/2 gallon water to get me 5.75 gallons pre boil, and got 5...

What to do, what to brew, basement too cold to ferment?

Will be bottling an Irish Red tommorrow, and saw the temp sticker on the carboy is about 55deg. I live in an old farmhouse, stone basement and its about 18 degrees outside. I was looking at recipes to brew, and realized its probably going to be too cold to ferment? Don't want a portable...

    AG porter with no activity

Brewed an AG porter yesterday. The grain we ground way to fine, other batches were good, should get better effect. with finer right? No, nothing but stuck sparge big time. We have 10 gal tun with hose. Had to stir and scrape away from hose, I figure that was bad just stirring up the sugars...

    AG efficiency help

Brewed third AG batch today. First two were Centennial Blonde, and 1st one grind was way off and didn't hit the numbers. Second batch we did good and got the OG on target, everything went good. Our setup we got off C-list, from someone who used to brew alot but was back in the 80s-90s. We...

Tried mini kegs for first time today

Included in the brewing equipment haul we got off craigslist were party star mini kegs. Read about the cons, but we got 'em so we tried 'em. Used the Centenntial Blonde that was our first AG batch that had a low gravity. Put it in kegs rather than toss. Not sure how it will carb, plugs don't...

    Second grind for Phil Mill?

Did frst AG last week, and didn't hit the OG, too low. Should have added DME, will know for next time which is tomorrow. Ground the grains today, and was looking at pics of what it should look like. My brother-in-law and I are brewing together, and have an old small Phill Mill. Last weeks...

    1st all grain and questions

Did the Centennial Blonde today, didn't come near target OG. Had problems and don't know what was the cause. OG should have been 1.04. I got 1.027. Thought the mash tub would lose more temp and it was too hot. Mashed at about 158 1 hour. Then the grains may have not been crushed enough...

Can I use this as a carboy?

Included in the stuff we got for homebrewing were 3 plastic carboys. They are not see thrust plastic but white and are laboratory grade Nalgene. Previous owner worked at lab. They are LDLP and that is food safe. Two 5 gal and one 6.5. One has a bottom drain plug.

Not much activity with pumpkin ale

Brewed the NB smashing pumpkin, and used pumpkin in it per directions. About 3" of stuff at the bottom, will probably wind up with only 4 gallons now. Used a hose for the first few days then bubbler airlock. Lots of bubbling first 2 days, now nothing 5 days later. Not much krausen on top at...

    Looking for quick+easy AG recipe

I'm looking for a good recipe for our first AG. Don't care too much on what style, prefer no wheat. Also something that we could drink sooner, so we know how much we screwed up.

First time brewing today hoping it works

First time brewing with my brother-in-law today, we got a full-grain setup off craigslist. We bought a Brewers best Red Ale kit from local brewing supply store, it was from a fresh delivery this week. I had soaked everything overnight in oxyclean, and rinsed. I used bleach and rinsed and...
