Bevflex & Perlick flow control faucet (650ss)

I've been serving from kegs with picnic taps for a couple years now. Its a pain I'd like to fix. I'm considering purchasing the Accuflex Bev-seal ultra 3/16" ID tubing along with the stainless steel flow control faucets. The beer I brew varies widely - from english ales, lagers, belgians...

    Alternative to glass flasks?

I've been shopping for something to make larger starters in and it just kills me to spend so much on something as fragile as a 5L flask. Anyone ever used a stainless bain marie pan? You could boil and chill in it. Bottoms are usually flat so stir bars should work fine. Seems like the only...

decoction, acid rest, and acid malt

Brewing a pilsner. I'm using Weyerman's floor malted bohemian pilsner malt which is slightly under modified. I was thinking about using a decoction mash for 2 reasons: 1) never done it and I have all Sunday to myself and 2) might help with the conversion. I've already added 5 oz of acid...

Do golden naked oats need to be mashed?

I'm planning on using the second runnings of a larger beer for a mild and was thinking about steeping some crystal and golden naked oats in the wort. My intuition is that golden naked oats are a light crystal and don't need to be converted. Is that right?

What is the proper way to size neutral wire

So you have 20A 120V to share in a panel. Lets say you put a 1A fuse on the hot in there to protect a component and enable you to use thinner gauge wire. What allows you to use thinner gauge wire on the neutral? My understanding is that the neutral will be the combined load of all the...

Possible inexpensive way to use STC-1000 with larger appliances - will it work?

I was dubious about using my stc-1000 with my large older freezer (5amp running rating - no max amp listed) I posted some investigation in the Electric Brewing forum. It seems like the relays in my unit are probably rated at 15amps...

Using a 10A controller with older frost free freezer - safe or no?

I have a older frost free upright GE freezer that I'd like to turn into a kegarator. I have an STC-1000 wired up on a small fridge that I use for fermenting. I thought I'd do the same for the freezer. The freezer's operating current draw is 5 amps. I got to thinking that it probably...

    Autumn version of Moon Man

I really like New Glarus' Moon Man. Easy drinking, hoppy, not overly bitter. Just really nice for summer. I want to do something similar, but have it be more spicy/earthy (keeping citrus on the low side) hops thats appropriate for late October drinking. Here's what I've got so far. I'm...

    STC-1000 from Amazon

Has anyone purchased the STC-1000 from the amazon seller? I'm concerned that its the 220 one and not the 110v one. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0084Y8HJK/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20

How early can you start a D-rest?

I have an Decemberfest (oktoberfest that I was late starting). It got a bit out of hand and I have a OG of 1.075 (new equipment changed efficiency). Pitched plenty of yeast. Pitched at 45F, sat there for a couple days, then raised to 52, where its fermenting now. I left my last sample out...

Video: John Palmer @ Northern Brewer talking about water.

Not sure if its posted elsewhere, but thought you might be interested. http://www.northernbrewer.com/connect/2012/06/john-palmer-on-residual-alkalinity-brewing-water/ Any thoughts? I like how he focused on getting the mash PH correct and not worrying about a historic profile. I laughed...

Using Bru'n Water and the primer...

Short Version: In the spreadsheet, what "Grain Type" is Victory. Would you expect to use some acid malt in the recipe below? Long Version: First, I don't have a ph meter. Its on the list, but for now, I have to make due with rules of thumb and excellent tools like Martin Brungard's...

Question about making a beer "red"

My wife and I have been working our way through x-files on netflix, and I've started using them as inspiration for beers. The first one was a baltic porter (Crying Krycek). I was thinking the next one would be Scully's. Was thinking about doing a rye based pale ale, but wanted to make it red...

Don't forget the secret ingredient when pitching yeast starters

It hasn't been well studied, but I suspect that yeast get emotionally attached to stir bars. The stir bar and yeast form a strong bond during the short time spent in a Erlenmeyer flask. That is why I've decided to start pitching my stir bar into the fermenter. I'm trying to keep my yeast...

Using WLP004 Irish Ale Yeast Cake for a slightly smaller beer

Brewed O'Flannigan's stout from a recipe on the board here (1.043 OG) with WLP004 Irish ale. When I bottle it, I was going to brew the Mild Mannered Ale (1.039) Originally, I had planned on using US-05 - but I got to thinking about just using the WLP004 cake. I've never re-used yeast before...

    Frankenstein Saison

So I just moved across the country, no longer have a basement that is 60-65 year round, but wanted to brew. Also, no banjo burners allowed at the apartment. Whats a brewer to do. I decided to try a 2.5 gallon all grain on the stove. Saison seemed good cause I can ferment at room temp. Found...

Temp stability in 10 gallon beverage cooler

I'm pretty sure there was a thread that mentioned something abou this, but I'm having some trouble with temp stability in my 10 gallon home depot beverage cooler. I've done 2 all grain batches, each with about 10lbs of grain, so there was a decent amount of head-space. I preheat my tun with...

    Oxygenation vs Pitching Rate

My understanding is that we oxygenate in order to get the yeast reproducing. If one pitches enough yeast from a healthy starter, is it still necessary? My thinking would be that if you pitch enough, you don't need the yeast to spend any time reproducing - they can get right to business.

First all-grain batch process - sanity check please

I’ve done 2 extract batches (just bottled my first) and in honor of National Homebrewer’s Day this Saturday, I’ve planned to get together with my buddies and brew some beer, drink some beer, and eat some grillables. This will be my first extract batch. We have a 7.5 gallon...

New Bottles - Do I need to brush them

I don't have a bottle brush, but have brand new bottles. Was going to soak in PBW for a bit, rinse, then tomorrow do a star san soak - then bottle. No brushing. Is that ok or is brushing needed. Seems like since there's no crap in them, it should be ok. But, I'm new to this, so I thought...
