    Phenolic smell in old kegs.

Hello all. I've had 3 kegs that were sitting around for almost 6 months in my back yard in 80-90 degree weather while I was out of the country. The beers in there were an IPA. I've never had a phenolic off-flavor in any of these beers, but when I was cleaning these kegs I noticed they had a...

    Blichmann QuickCarb not carbing well.

Hello everyone, I recently purchased the blichmann quickcarb and it worked pretty well once or twice, but now I"m not sure why, but it seems to not be carbonating as well. So before with a temp of roughly 4C, I would use the quickcarb according to the instructions by hitting it with 13PSI for...

In Beersmith, mash time isn't affecting OG

Hi there. I'm working on Beersmith 2 and have noticed that in the Mash tab the length of the mash doesn't seem to affect the OG whether I set the mash length to 10 minutes or 90 minutes it remains the same. Am I doing something wrong here? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Can Blichmann quick-carb machine be used w/ Sanke?

I think I'll start this post by answer my own question. I would assume it does work so long as there is a coupler w/ ball locks on it. However, I thought I'd go ahead and ask before spending $150 on this thing. I only have Sanke kegs and am just wondering if there is anything structurally...

Do "professional" brewers consider brulosophy to be a load of bs?

Bit of a controversial title, but hear me out. I've got some buddies who own commercial breweries who I shoot the ish w/ once in a while. I've brought up things like "cold break" where the master brewer of many years who told me "I've heard of that term. Really don't know what it is." in a...

Question a bout this sanke fermenter conversion kit

Hello everyone, I've been looking for better ways to ferment/transfer beer and came across a tool on a couple homebrew sites. One of these attachments also includes a cleaning attachment which is demoed in this video below. However, looking at the pressure of the water using the chugger (same...

Carbonated 2 kegs @ 30PSI for 48hrs. One is fine, one is nothing but foam.

Hello everyone, If you remember my post about carbonating a beer in 3 days, I went ahead and carbonated for 2 days at 30PSI. However, one of the kegs is nothing but foam and one of the kegs is a bit foam, but manageable if poured very slowly. I'm wondering how might this have happened and...

Gelatin: Add at cold crash temps and keep it at that temp?

Hi all. Today I am using gelatin for the first time and from all of the reading it seems that the consensus is to add it when it's very cold (34f). However, I was wondering should I keep my temp controlled freezer at that temperature (34f) or should i raise it up to a higher temperature when I...

How can I carb a keg in 3 days?

There are so many posts online from reputable websites with each one giving different methods of carbonation that it has confused to crap out of me. One website said to use the set/forget carb chart for 5 days, others have said 1 week, while others have said 12 days. I have a couple of...

Kegs sat at room temp for 3 days. Am I screwed?

So I didn't notice the other day that the plug on my temp controlled freezer had been kicked loose possibly for 3-4 days. It's finished beer that I was just giving time to condition. I am cooling it back down to test later, but just wondering... Is the beer probably bad now?

I want to start an off-flavor class/homebrew meet in my town. Advice?

I've been brewing for less than a year now and have always wanted to try one of those Siebel sensory kits. I live in Southeast Asia and I happened to have a friend coming by so I asked him to bring a kit for me (6 flavors). I already have a couple of experienced brewers who are on board, but...

If pellicle forms on beer that was left out, does it mean keg is also infected?

Hello everyone So about a week ago I posted about a wheat beer that I brewed with kiwis having a mild tartness to it despite the fact that when I tasted the kiwis themselves, they weren't tart at all. I wasn't sure whether the tartness was from an infection or not. Anyway I had a glass of...

I made a kiwi wheat beer that is a bit tart. How do I know it's not an infection?

So I made a wheat beer that I threw kiwis into during secondary and kept it there for 5 days. The ate abotu 3 of the kiwis and I don't recall them being too tart. Just "normal" tart/sweet level. I fermented with WB-06 and tried to keep temp down because I didn't want too much banana-flavored...

What precautions do I need to make when tapping a keg more than once?

I make beer using 2.5 kegs at a time. For that half keg (1/6th) I have just been using to drink myself and taste over time. What I do is I tap it, drink a glass or two, then untap it until I drink it again. Do I need to take any precautions when I do this? Like won't doing this affect the...

Can't get the raspberries I wanted for throwing in secondary. What do you recommend?

I made a pretty serious mistake. I brewed an American wheat with the intention of putting raspberries in secondary. I'm ready to throw them in and went out to grab some at the Vietnamese version of costco, but I'm not able to get the raspberries right now without paying an arm and a leg where...

Does a batch twice the size need twice as much fruit?

I'm brewing a beer out of a book that calls for 6lbs of raspberries for a 5 Gallon batch. I'm making a 10gallon batch and was wondering if I should just double the amount of fruit or not.

Can I temporarily clean sankes by soaking in pbw or caustic?

I have recently started kegging with Sankes and am currently waiting on my pump to complete my keg washing build. Unfortunately, the pump wont arrive for another couple weeks and I have some beer I want to keg right now and a bunch of dirty kegs. I was wondering if I'd be ok with just filling...

Is it a bad idea to use a self-priming diaphragm pump for transfer of fermented beer?

Hello my friends. I've been fermenting in large 60L plastic barrels and pressurizing the barrel to push beer out and into kegs. However, the whole thing is kinda sketchy (pressurized plastic container) and takes about 20-30 minutes to fill a keg. I've been looking at pumps and came across...

I brewed a delicious SMaSH. What should I try next?

The title is a bit vague. But I've just started brewing this year and took the forum advice on trying out smash recipes for starters. I have a few brews under my belt and recently brewed a delicious Citra smash and would like to know what would be a good style to try next. Something that isn't...

I want to build this keg washing station and had some questions.

So I was looking through keg cleaning solutions and I think this design looks pretty good:https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=320438 I was wondering: 1.) Is using steel braided hose ok in this situation? Will the insides somehow be damaged when using caustic or pbw? 2.) Do the...
