First time using fruit...question about time

Hello all, I made a Belgian Strong Ale, OG was 1.106 and FG is 1.013 after 3 weeks :rockin::tank: I just racked into secondary with 2 LBS of frozen cherries (should I add more cherries?) How long can these cherries sit in the beer? I poorly planned this and perhaps I should have let this...

    Always missing OG after boil

I consistently achieve my estimated pre-boil gravity but after the boil I always miss the OG by 5 or so points. What am I doing wrong? I'm too lazy to add DME at the end of my boil to reach my desired OG :drunk:

Northern Brewer Chipotle Porter Recipe AG

My lord is this beer good. I totally recommend it. Og was about 1066 FG 1013. Sweet/smokey taste in the beginning then a nice smooth burn in the back of your throat in the end. I cut 5-6 chipotle peppers and put them in a muslin bag for 4 days. This results in the perfect heat for me. Great beer...

All my beers finish around 1.008-1.010

I've been brewing now for a couple years. Since brewing AG I've noticed this with all my beers. I brewed extract beers for about a year before making the plunge to AG. With extract my FG was always spot on (typical for extract brews). With AG about 99% of my beers have a FG of 1.008 - 1.011. I...

    Plinian IPA from NB

I just ordered this kit (AG version of course). Has anybody ever tried it? It has a couple hop shots used for bittering, which I've never used before.

    Krausen in bottles?

Do you think this is krausen? I normally keg, first time I've seen this in bottles. Maybe fermentation in the bottle left behind some krausen, could be infection or yeast sediment. Beer has been bottled for 2 weeks now, almost every bottle has this sediment in the neck of the bottle. What do you...

    Dark Star burner issues *solved*

Hello brewmasters! I received a dark star burner from Northern Brewer and had issues with it immediately. I was bummed out because I sold my bayou burner on CL the day before my new burner arrived in the mail. My bayou burner performed great and the new burner didn't. I would get black soot all...

    Will this over flow?

By far the largest starter I've had to make. I'm making a coffee stout with an estimated OG of 1074. Northern Brewer sent me a pack of Wyeast 1968 ESB Ale that's 40 days old. According to a yeast calculator I needed a 2L starter. I am a bit nervous that this will over flow. I put it on the stir...

Adjusting grain bill due to good efficiency?

I have been brewing AG for a couple months. I get about 80-85% efficiency with my setup and I am just realizing that I need to adjust the recipe to keep the beer within style correct? I was inputing a recipe into beer smith from Northern Brewer and the expected OG is off the chart due to my...

Ordered from Northern Brewer but shipped from Midwest Supplies?

I ordered a recipe all grain kit, dark star burner, a pound of smoked cherrywood malt, and a barley crusher mill from Northern Brewer. I have a UPS MyChoice account and it's showing that the burner and mill was shipped from Midwest Supplies. Is this normal business for online homebrew shops? I...

    AG Bacon Beer (bacon extract)

So I am piecing together the bacon beer recipe from northern brewer but I can't find bacon extract. NB doesn't sell it and only provides it in their kit. Any idea where I can purchase this ingredient? I tried Whole foods and Trader Joes with no luck. I can order on amazon but it's super...

    Homebrew hangovers

Since I started drinking homebrew a year ago I've noticed the hangovers are much worse vs drinking commercial beer. The tradeoff is worth drinking great beer however. Anybody else have the same experience?

    Thinner Mash?

Hey guys I have a quick question as I will be mashing in a couple hours. I am making the centennial blonde recipe which has 9 pounds total grain. Beersmith is telling me to mash with 3 gallons of strike water and sparge with 5.2 gallons. My problem is the pot I use to heat up strike/sparge water...

Dry hop necessary if over 100 IBU's????

I'm going to make a black IPA and according to beersmith the IBU's will be 102. The recipe calls for 1oz of dry hop for 7 days after primary fermentation. Is this really necessary since the IBU's are so high?

What's the difference between base malts?

New AG brewer here. So what's the difference between marris otter, two row, six row, etc etc. Specialty grains are a given so I'm just wondering about base malt. Unless certain base malts must be used with certain specialty grains.
