5 gal big enough for primary?

Hi all. We were going to brew a mid sized Belgian 5-7% and already have our 6gal carboys in use. We want to brew again and only have the 5gal ones to use. Would they have enough head space to use as a primary, or would we loose a lot of beer out the blowoff tubes? ....maybe I should just go out...

    Sanitizer in beer!!!!

Do you think that I could "dry hop" the beer by throwing some hops in the keg? Would that stuff just go to the bottom and clog up the dip tube?

    Sanitizer in beer!!!!

We are big idiots!! Left a gallon of sanitizer in the barrel and then racked beer on top of it. Now we have sanitizer-beer mix. Is it still safe to drink?? Tasted it and it is thin and watery, but not the end of the world. Ideas??

    Use yeast a second time

    Use yeast a second time

Not to sound lazy, but how many times can I do that? Can I harvest the yeast after that second pitching and throw it in a jar and refrig for use at a later date.

    Use yeast a second time

People talk about saving yeast from a carboy and re-pitching it in new wort. Is it OK to just leave it in the bottom of the primary and just throw new wort on top of it? If so should I do it immediately, or can I do it in the next day or two? Is this a totally crazy idea? Thanks for all of...

Triple belgian looks like a red ale

You are right, although it looks pretty red/dark in the carboy, in the thin cylinder, it has a nice color. Of course, we did not waste that small sampling and the flavor is fantastic. The hops come through more than a standard triple Belgian, and the finish has a very mild alcohol flavor on...

Triple belgian looks like a red ale

Thanks for your help. We did a full volume, 10 gallon boil that was a double batch. We did hold off on adding one of the malt extracts until the very end of the boil and did not add the sugar until the end of the boil as well. We used star san to sanitize all of the equipment as well. It is...

Triple belgian looks like a red ale

It was called houblinmonster from northern home brewer. It is definitely darker than it should be. When we racked it to secondary they both had gone all the way down to SG of 1.008, and it tasted GREAT! So only slightly concerned about the color, but it is not going to look like the beer in...

Triple belgian looks like a red ale

Hi all, love the site and thanks for all the great info so far. About 4 weeks ago my friend and I brewed our second batch of beer. It was a triple Belgian IPA that initially was a beautiful light golden color. We brewed a full volume 10 gallon batch and split it into 2 carboys. It stayed...

Split batch is 2 different colors?

Something strange happened to a split batch of triple Belgian double IPA! I brew with a friend and we do full boils of 10 gallons, then split the batch into 2 carboys then pitch the yeast. We brewed just our second batch and everything went well. The fermenters are kept side by side in the...

    Houblinmonster fermentation time

Hi everyone! Brand new brewer and brand new to this forum. Just barreled my first batch. On that same day, decided to brew up a pretty "big" beer. It is a kit from Northern Brewer, called Houblinmonster. It has a OG of about 1.082 and it says to primary ferment for 1-2 weeks and then rack to...
