Where to buy conductive silicone gel

Where can I find conductive silicone gel to put in a thermowell? Can you find this kind of thing in a typical hardware store or Home Depot? Or an electronics store maybe? I'm in the San Diego area if anyone knows of a store in San Diego.

removing grain stuck in plate chiller

I have a DudaDiesel plate chiller and unfortunately I accidentally got some grains going through it on my last brew. I've been pumping water through it and about 10 grains come out and then I reverse the flow and then another 10 grains come out and repeat back and forth and the grains just keep...

false-bottom on MoreBeer mash-tun too low

I recently purchased a MoreBeer 26gal mash-tun and noticed the false-bottom sits too low to clear the valve opening. The legs are just too short. Anyone else using these mash-tuns and observed the same thing? I could put a fitting in that valve-port for something to rest the false-bottom on...

need source for large plastic buckets

I've been using two 6gal carboys for my 10gal batches forever. I want to try a single large plastic bucket now (easier to fit in my fridge, lighter than a demijohn, etc.). Anyone have a good source for something around 15gal?

    Bayou Classic 1082 20gal

Has anyone tried a Bayou Classic 1082 20gal kettle? I'm thinking of converting one to a mash-tun.

    Any downside to center-inlet pumps?

I need another pump. My current pump is an 815 with an inline head. Is there any downside to center-inlet pumps? I can't think of any reason to get the inline models anymore and will probably just get center-inlet models from now on. Any advice appreciated.

    tall-skinny or short-fat mash-tun

Does the aspect-ratio of a mash-tun's dimensions matter like it does for brew-kettles? i.e. would a keggle mash-tun be better or worse than short-fat mash-tun like the 15gal polarware pots? e.g. I could imagine a taller grain bed might be slower to distribute the heat in a recirculation...

making your own false-bottom from perforated stainless steel sheets

I need a custom false bottom with 3/32" holes on 5/32" centers. I'd like something exactly like the Polarware false-bottoms but with my custom size. NorCal/Jaybird could handle this but they seem pretty expensive... more than the cost of the kettle I'm buying! Does anyone know of an...

cleaning new fittings and plate-chiller for first-time use

I just got a bunch of new stainless camlock fittings as well as a Duda Diesel plate-chiller and March pump. I was just going to run some PBW through it all before using for the first time but thought I'd check here to see if there's something else I should do in case of oils or whatever from...

flower hops and a new kettle

I have been using flower hops in my 10gal Polarware kettle with a false bottom to keep the flowers separated from the outlet at the bottom of the kettle. Works great. Now I'm thinking about getting a 15gal kettle and have been looking at Stout kettles. The philosophy with those kettles is to...

    fly-sparging: flow not steady

I am trying a new setup for me: Mash-tun is 10gal Polarware with false bottom (leaves 1gal foundation water). It has a ball-valve with hose-barb fitting with 3/8" inner-diameter vinyl hose leading to boil-kettle via gravity. Sparge sprinkler (rotating) on top maintaining about 3/4" water...

Stout Kettle: 9.2gal or 15gal for 5gal batches

I need a new kettle. I do 5gal batches and have used a 10gal Polarware in the past (boil starts with about 7gal). This doesn't leave much room for controlling boilovers so I thought I'd just go 15gal this time around. But then I noticed the Stout kettles and their taller (smaller-diameter)...

    Whole-leaf hops with Blichmann Boilermaker

I'm looking for recommendations for separating whole-leaf hops in a Blichmann Boilermaker? Their hop-screen is advertised for pellets only. Is their false-bottom a good solution? I currently have a 10gal Polarware kettle with a false bottom and that works great with whole-leaf hops. I'm...

only two layers in my washed yeast vessel

I thought I'd try washing yeast for the first time. The picture shows the flask after sitting overnight. I only really see two distinct layers, not three like I see in tutorials. Should I just pitch the whole thing or do I have a problem here? It's a bit "alive", with little bubbles shooting...

Roasted barley at mash-in or mash-out

I've noticed some recipes that include roasted barley call for the roasted barley to be added at mash-out/sparge and NOT in with the rest of the grist at mash-in. Why?

    selecting a stout faucet

It seems there are two primary choices for stout faucets these days: http://www.micromatic.com/draft-keg-beer/taps-faucets-pid-JESF-4.html and http://www.beveragefactory.com/draftbeer/faucets/faucets/SF2001.shtml Putting aside the obvious cosmetic difference and that one is all...

    beer gas or straight nitro

Is beer gas (75% nitro, 25% CO2) necessary if I force-carb ahead of time with 100% CO2? The reason I ask is: I can get refills with 100% nitro much cheaper than a beer-gas mix I am wondering if I keep the pressure at 30PSI (a typical level for pouring with nitro through stout faucets) if...

maintaining temps with kettle mash-tun and no RIMS

I do not want to get into the whole RIMS thing. Just too complicated for me right now (cleaning pumps and all). I have a 10-gal Polarware kettle with a false bottom that I want to use as a mash-tun. In the past I've used a cooler but it's 15 years old and seen better days and this time around...

    False-bottoms and efficiency

The common opinion seems to be the higher the false-bottom (i.e. the more foundation-water space beneath the false bottom), the worse the efficiency. What doesn't make sense to me though is if I were to vorleuf the same amount of volume of the foundation-water, wouldn't that eliminate this idea...
