What would you make to fill a 51 gallon barrel?

We have four barrels from California that held red wine. American White Oak, medium char. Used 3-4 years or so. They have been empty for some time, so the cleaning and rinsing is going to take some time :) We would be brewing on two 10 gallon systems, likely a full day of brewing to get...

    Brewing while sick?

Hey all, I have been putting off kegging a batch because I've been a little sick and am coughing pretty often. My wife thinks that as much time as I spend sterilizing things that it would be fine. However, now I am not sure. I presume cooks/kitchen folk work pretty often a little under the...

    Making fresh pumpkin puree

There are tons of threads about pumpkin beers, pumpkin recipes, and how to brew with pumpkin this time of the year. This thread is NOT answering any of those. This thread is my attempt to help those who enjoy being "closer" to their ingredients the opportunity to avoid using canned pumpkin...

After two years of brewing, I finally had a bad batch!

10 gallons of Ed Wort's House Pale - something I have made at least 10 times, too. So now I am curious, did I breathe some lacto onto it? Will it be a sour pale? Those take a LONG time though, right? I wanted to free this container up.. dump? no dump? I am surprisingly not too...

    Autosparge and March pump

WILL IT WORK? Ive read pro and con on this.. will a march pump seize? Or will it push the autosparge open? Anyone using these together? I'm in a 10g HD cooler.

Might not be getting plants in the ground this year.

Totally missed my window for here in Texas. Should I freeze the rhizomes? Will they survive a year of dormancy?

    Starter OG for a BarleyWine

I've heard mixed opinions - some say all starters are 1.040, some say make it near your beer so the yeast acclimate. What do you think? Looking at a 1.118 recipe for next weekend am calculating yeast needs.

March pumps, and being close to heat

Anyone know what temp the march pumps can stand? I have a brewstand with 3 banjo burners (200k BTU) and I don't even like standing near it on full blast. I would be really concerned about leaving the pumps 6" under the burners on this stand... I have heat shields for them as well, but it...

Time to start understanding mashing better

I really need to understand mash better. I have done about 20 AG batches, and recently stepped from 5g to 10g batches (so so much better if you are considering it, BTW) Every SINGLE batch I have done was a single infusion mash for 60 minutes, vorlauf, and sparge for 30-60 minutes. I won't say...

    Sanke keggle candidate too rough?

I just got a free keg that has been in a friends yard for a few years... I think the bottom might be in too rough a shape. It wobbles when it is sitting on the driveway and you can rock it about 20 degrees. I'd love to have another keggle, but I don't know.. this one might be too far gone :(

    5 gallon to 10 gallon

So I completed my first 10g AG batch a few weeks back. A few things I learned. That HD 10g Mashtun aint gonna cut it for 10g all the time. Might need a 3rd keggle after all. My question however - when trying a 5g recipe in a 10g batch - is ingredient planning linear? For example.. a...

Man, adding new gear made my brewday stumble

First day using my therminator. Opted for gravity fed (still scared of spraying hot wort everywhere with the pump that doesnt have a housing yet) Day started off pretty good. mashed in a little high for me (168) and gravity was solid for my 6.5g of run off. Then while I was building a...

Wedding brew day - planning blog

Hey all. Ive posted here with some planning questions, and with April 30th on the near horizon, it was time to start planning. I decided to keep a blog for this, but will update and take questions here as well. http://weddingbrewing.blogspot.com/ Enjoy. I should be posting every 2-3 days or...

    Beersmith help?

So I have been using beersmith pretty successfully for a bit and was using the 10g igloo + 7.5g brewpot and I've noticed that in my last 3-4 batches, I consistently had almost 1 gallon of extra wort post boil and cooling. The things that have majorly changed with my setup and process since...

New Belgium Lips of Faith Belgo IPA

I really LOVE this beer. Enough that I want a LOT more of it. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/192/59811 From the bottle/website: Belgo IPA is a Belgian twist on India Pale Ale made with five varieties of hops. Simcoe, Cascade, Centennial, and Amarillo hops are pitched in the kettle...

    Wasted beer...

20 years ago, it was any drop of BMC that hit the ground at a party. 10 years ago, it was a half empty Guinness or bass at the end of a night. Tonight.. it's the 4 gallons of Scotch Ale that I drank before it was mellow and smooth. Left one growler for an extra 2 months, and now its...

Alt-F4 - the first beer I felt deserved labelling.

I felt weird labelling while doing extracts, and just as much when I was doing AG, I was still following the LHBS' recipe... But after about 6 runs of the same recipe (over time, not all in a row) I decided to change things up a bit. Changed the yeast strain to a Kolsch, added a round of dry...
