    Infected?

Went to keg an All Grain BIAB Porter this morning, and noticed this. Looks like an infection to me, but the second pic I took after transferring and leaving the stuff to sit in the bottom, it looked more like spent grains. The FG sample smelled and tasted fine. Dump and clean?

    Scottish Export Recipe Opinions?

Fumbling towards a nice, darkish, malty 2.5 Gallon BIAB Scottish Export recipe. Anything look glaringly wrong with it? https://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/recipe/view/1311356/big-red-willy-scottish-ale

    Sabro SMaSH Malt Recommendations

I'm intrigued by the possibility of getting coconut flavor from Sabro hops, and was working on a possible Golden Promise/Sabro SMaSH. Sound like a good combo? Other options? https://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/recipe/view/1308260/golden-promise-sabro-smash

Induction Cook Top Users: What thermometer do you use?

Looks like my new Duxtop P961LS is not only slower than my electric stove top, but it also has trouble playing well with thermometers. How do you constantly monitor your temps without interference? Tempted to just send it back and get a propane burner instead.

Can mash get hotter after turning off the heat source?

This stems from another thread, but thought it was worth inquiring in this forum... I used an induction cook top for the first time this past weekend. I brought my mash water up to temp (155º), turned off the cook top, and added my grains. After stirring well, the temp was now down to 152º. I...

    Induction Cooktop Recommendations?

Looking to get off of the stovetop. Was thinking of propane, but not having to buy it, as well as not being able to bring it inside if need be, has me considering induction instead. Besides, my 22 qt brewpot is induction ready. I'd only be using it for 3 to 4 gallon batches. I'm limiting to...

Fermenting in Keg: Gas Disconnect Blow off not venting!

I removed the poppit and attached a hose to the gas disconnect to a glass of starsan, but for some reason, it's not blowing off. Pressure is building, because when I removed the gas disconnect, lots air blew out. 3 gallon batch in a 5 gal corny. What am I doing wrong??

Help with water profile for SMaSH Pale Ale

I'm working up a 3 gallon BIAB SMaSH Marris Otter/Citra recipe and will be using distilled or bottled RO Water and am considering Calcium Chloride (1.5 g) and Gypsum (4 g) additions. I'm using Brewer's Friends "Light Colored hoppy" water profile. These additions give me a predicted mash pH of...

Formulating my first All Grain w/ Citra and Maris Otter SMASH

Jumping into all grain with a 3 gallon batch. Wanted to keep it simple, so I worked up a MO Citra Smash. Does this recipe look like a good start? https://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/recipe/view/1289274/citra-mo-smash

Can you ferment in Keg without Spunding Valve?

I've been doing 5 gallon extract batches and fermenting in a Speidel. I'm looking to cut back my batches to 2.5 gallons (for more variety, and the ability to do all grain on my stove top) and was looking to buy a smaller fermenter. I have an extra 5 gallon corny, and figured I could just use it...

Just not Home Brew Network material I reckon...

Tried to join this group on Facebook, but got a message that I was "automatically declined based on criteria admins added to this group." Must be pretty damned exclusive!

Komos Kegerator Bites The Dust at 14 months

Oh Joy. The Komos Kegerator I so carefully researched before buying last September now appears to be nothing more than a $700 paperweight. I keep this thing in my kitchen. I noticed the other day that instead of the 38 deg, I keep it set at, it was showing 55. I noticed that the compressor...

    Thoughts on this Water Report...

Just got this back from Ward. This is for a vineyard where I'll be helping to get a nano brewery up and running. Probably 20 gal. to 100 gal. batches for the most part. I've been studying water chemistry, but it's not my strong point. Anyone have any glaring insights?

    Software for extract brewing?

Is software helpful at all for extract brewing? I recently got back into it, and am currently just brewing extract recipes from Northern Brewer and MoreBeer with distilled water. I do plan to try a few partial mash recipes soon, but I'm not sure I'll be going into All Grain or not. I've read...

    Partial Mash Bag Size

I'm going to do my first partial mash soon, and will need a bag large enough to hold at least 6 lb of grains, but not way too big for a 5 gallon/22 liter pot. Northern Brewer sells a 2' x 3', but it seems like that might be overkill. Will the freebie muslin bags included for steeping grains at...

Partial Mash vs. All Grain - 5 gallon pot

I've got a 5 gallon pot which I've been using for extract brews. I've been thinking of trying a 5-gallon partial mash/partial boil kit, but would I be better off just diving in and doing a 3 gallon full boil all grain BIAB? I cook inside on the stove, and don't want to buy a larger kettle, as I...

    Cold Crash in the Keg

I don't have room to cold crash the fermenter for my next batch, Dead Ringer IPA, so I was going to go straight to the keg, and cold crash it. I usually force carb, so to my understanding (after a ton of reading), my best plan of action would be to transfer to keg, refrigerate at low pressure (2...

Most annoying trends in craft beer advertising...

    1. Overflowing beer in every photo. This annoys the hell out of me. Clean it up and learn how to pour! 2. Using the word "crushable"in ad copy. It bugs the hell out of me for some reason. 3 Using "af" in ad copy. Really?

Cold Crash in a Speidel 30L

When cold crashing with the Speidel, I've been removing the airlock, and screwing on the cap. Will loosening the cap to relieve pressure once during the process be more likely to oxidize the beer than just covering with foil? Would I be better off just leaving the airlock on with some vodka in...
