Low OG - using dried malt extract

Due to technical difficulties in my last brew day, (dropping my mash tun and spilling wort all over the floor) my OG ended up being 1.043 and not the target 1.063. It’s an IPA and I would like to keep the alcohol content up around 6%. I’m projected to be 4% That being said I’m thinking of...

OG supposed to be 1.045, measured 1.025.....

Need help, no clue what happened, scaled a 5 gallon recipe to a 11 gallon (into the fermenter) and ended up with a gravity reading a full .020 lower than expected. Probably my 20th batch, never had an issue scaling before. Grain bill 9 lbs Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM) Grain 1 45.0 %...

2 types of hops growing, no idea what they are!

Warning: hop growing newb Hi all, I have been growing one kind of hop that I bought probably 6 years ago. I assumed it was cascade based on a quick article that was telling me what types of hops would grow in my region. I now realize that there's a lot more types that can be grown where I am...

In the market for new boiler - something like what BRU GEAR makes

Hey all, looking to purchase a new boiler in the 15-20gal range. Was really hoping to get this from Bru Gear http://www.bru-gear.com/ProBoilertm-15-Gallon-Kettle-Gen-2-with-optional-customization_p_87.html But unfortunately after multiple emails and phone calls, no one has returned any...

    Irish Stout - Fermentation

Brewed an irish stout on the 1st of December. Gravity was correct. Pitching temp for yeast (dry packet) was correct. I've never brewed an Irish stout before. I don't have the big head of krausen with a super active airlock. All I am seeing on the surface of the beer is a few bubbles...

Cold crash / whirlfloc for cider?

Just about to venture into cider making this week. Picked about 12 trash bags of a variety of apples for free so I may as well make lots of the stuff. Just wondering for clarification, can you use similar methods to what is used in beer making? (whirfloc, cold crash, secondary, etc)

    First possible infection? Help!

Cream ale that is well past minimum fermentation. Practiced pretty stringent cleaning and sterilizing. This happened after I siphoned into my bottling bucket from secondary. Unfortunately once in the bottling bucket I was unable to bottle right away so I didn't add any corn sugar and sealed...

7th batch, just boiled with lid on....

Failed to notice some critical reading on boiling with the lid off at all times. Have been using stovetop range for first six batches and kept the lids off. Got a highly efficient stainless steel setup with propane burner and lid. Kept the lid on as I got to boiling so damn fast I was...

Gravity- how far off is too far?

Just recently completed my sixth batch of an all grain cream ale. Using BeerSmith it said my original gravity should be 1.051. Using a refractometer I had an OG of 1.053. Considering the equipment I use and my lack of experience I'm pretty happy with that reading. How far off is too...

Bottle Cleaning: Negligent, lazy, or both?

Hi all, Pretty new to this. I'm just short of ten batches and learning lots along the way. When it comes to bottles, the swing top style, I had started cleaning and sanitizing using unscented bleach. Recently purchased some Starsan and I am loving the stuff. I have sterilized two...

    Hello from Peterborough, Ontario, Canada

Hi all! Started my foray into beer brewing early this year. Started with an easy to use extract kit. Didn't go so well the first time, beer kinda smelled like a fart and I over primed my bottles to the point where if I turned them upside down and popped the cap I could hit a satellite...
