pre-hopped ipa lme and dark lme thinking of mixing

So I have a 4lb. can of pre-hopped IPA LME and a 3lb. can of dark LME. I am thinking about mixing the two for a five gallon batch and doing about a 20 minute boil with another ounce of hops. What do you guys think I might end up with? I was wondering if it might make something similar to a...

is a 52 quart cooler too big to use for 5 gal batches

I think I will give the cooler that I have a try and if it just won't work then I guess I will buy a new one. Still have a little ways to go though before I will have everything I need to go all grain.

    Irish stout lacking flavor

I got it. Not gonna touch it. Newbie has heard and understood. Gotta ask questions or will never learn. Could just use the wait and see method, but why do that when there are experienced people who can satisfy my curiosity.

    Irish stout lacking flavor

I appreciate your input. I am hoping that the others are right and it will get better. But like I said in the original post, it isn't actually bad. I just want it to be better than it is right now. I believe it will be.

    Irish stout lacking flavor

ah yes the wife. I said something about going ahead and getting another batch in my second fermenter and she was all like "the first one isn't even done yet. do you really need that much beer?"

Did you do the same kit from Midwest Supplies?

    Irish stout lacking flavor

The room where it is fermenting stays right around 65 degrees. The rest of the house stays between 70 and 72. Do you think I should move it in to warmer part of the house after bottling?

    Irish stout lacking flavor

Don't worry. I had and still have no plans on doing anything drastic. I was wanting to bottle on the 4th which would have been just shy of 3 weeks in the fermenter. If you think I should let it sit even longer then I will. I trust the judgement of those who have been doing this a lot longer...

    Irish stout lacking flavor

I have an Irish stout that has been in the fermenter for two weeks now. I took a gravity reading today and that looks good. I tasted my sample, and although it wasn't bad, it wasn't as good as I'd have liked. There isn't a bad flavor. There just isn't much of a flavor IMO. I was expecting to...

    confused about boil amounts

I have been looking at AG recipes. I am confused because although they are all trying to achieve 5.5 gal. batches, there are boil amounts ranging from 6 - almost 8 gallons. Why is that? If liquid evaporates at a certain rate when boiling, wouldn't you get different amounts at the end of a 60...

is a 52 quart cooler too big to use for 5 gal batches

I read somewhere that you shouldn't use too large of a cooler for mashing because you will have a shallow grain bed. I have a 52 quart cooler. Is that too big if I want to make 5 gallon batches?

Is it bad to move fermenting beer?

My beer has been fermenting for about 10 or 11 days now. A situation arose this morning where I had to move my fermentor. I did it as gently as possible, but it still obviously moved the liquid around some. Is this bad? Could it cause any ill effects?

first time to brew and OG way high

Yeah it's an extract and that is my guess as well. Would it be safe to open it now that it has been sitting for four days? Should I just wait until it has been a week? There doesn't seem to have been much activity.

first time to brew and OG way high

when I took my first reading before pitching yeast it was around 1.090. I know that is way too high. All I can think of is that when I topped it up I didn't mix it well enough and got a bit of the concentrated wort. It was supposed to start at 1.045. Or maybe because when I topped it up to what...

first brew fermentation temp. too low?

Okay. I gently rocked the bucket back and forth in a circular motion. Going to leave it alone now for the next four days and then I will take a gravity reading. Speaking of gravity, when I took my first reading before pitching yeast it was around 1.090. I know that is way too high. All I...

first brew fermentation temp. too low?

so I should just wait out the remainder of a week and then take a reading with the hydrometer?

first brew fermentation temp. too low?

62 hours now and still no bubbles. Looks like there is a bit of a krausen ring though. Really hope this worked. Don't know where I went wrong. I hate not getting things right. So disappointing.
