    Temperature, pressure, and quantity monitoring.

I set up a Raspberry pi to monitor my keg fridge. Every 10 minutes a python program gets pressure (using a sensor, ADS1115, and level shifter), temperature (using DHT22 sensors), and keg weight (using a wheatstone bridge load cell array and an HX711 amplifier). The data is sent to my Android...

    Grist hydration

My current process is to begin filling the mash tun with hot water, then I dump grain, stir, dump more grain, stir, dump more grain, stir...you know how that gets old and imprecise. I am looking for a way to meter the grain into the mash tun at a steady rate so I can just keep stirring (and...

    Raspberry Pi keg fridge monitor

My discussion isn't directly related to Automated Brewing, but it is a technology topic. I am using a Raspberry Pi to monitor a few things around the brewery: I have fermentation temperature monitoring using two DHT22 sensors taped to the side of the fermenters. The python script runs every 5...

Would you use this for your cider?

Local grocery store has this for just over $5 per gallon. Should I go for it?

How much do you oxygenate wort?

I use a 2 micron stone and an oxygen source set at 2 liters per minute to oxygenate 2.5 gallons of wort. Too much? Too little? What dou you guys do?

First root beer (extract and force carbonating)

I have been encouraged to make a root beer for a Christmas gathering. I would prefer to keep the guess work out of it, so I am going the easy way. Don't want any bombs or overcarbonation. I'll be using an extract (makes 4 gallons) and force carbonation. I am a beer brewer who has a few...

I don't care where you went

I can't stand when coworkers brag about going to a Bud Miller or Coors brewery. I am NOT impressed by mass production of a product that lacks flavor or character. Going on a tour does not make you a beer aficionado and we still have nothing in common. Come back and talk to me when you know...

8 ounces of hops in a hop spider

I made a hop spider for yesterday's 10 gallon batch. I used a 5 gallon paint strainer and allowed it to hang long into the kettle. My recipe involved 8 ounces of hops. Each addition was 2 ounces (60, 10, 5, whirlpool). When I added my last addition, I dropped the hops in and started the spin...

Dispensing two kegs with one faucet.

I'm considering stashing two kegs of the same beer in the back of my fridge. (Big batch split to two kegs) It is difficult to connect the fittings back there and I don't want to disturb them to do so. I'm considering tapping both kegs and using a T to combine the beer lines so a single line...

Safe for nylon to touch bottom of kettle?

I'm building my hop spider and using a 5 gallon nylon paint strainer bag. Is there any danger of melting if I leave it long enough to touch the bottom of my kettle? It won't be going in until I am kettle full and near boil.

    What's your next upgrade?

Admit it. Our brewing stuff is never complete. There is always something else to get. What is your next upgrade? I might be getting some unexpected income and I'm considering banjo burners.

    Viton o-rings inside Better-Bottles

I have bought replacement o-rings for my ported Better-Bottle, except for the Teflon encapsulated ring that goes on the adapter inside the bottle. Has anyone used a regular o-ring on the inside? Does it allow the adapter to rotate without loosening?

    better-bottle rings

I broke one of the very small o-rings on the racking valve of my better-bottle. Instead of ordering from them, I did some research and found a good source for all of their rings. Some come in packages of 50 or 100. More than I would need. Since I did not purchase them from one of our...

Double this recipe (help with hop schedule)

A few weeks ago I brewed a very nice ale. My wife agrees. She's drinking it all. I intend to do a double batch of this as my first 10 gallon recipe. Here's what it was for 5 gallons 10 lbs Maris Otter, mashed at 150 until converted, fly sparged for 7.5 gal preboil, 90 minute boil for 5...

    Swagelok bulkhead fittings

Disclaimer: I am not selling these, not bidding on these, and I don't have any affiliation with the seller. I have these swagelok bulkhead fittings all over my brewstand. SS-810-11-8. They normally sell for about $25 new, best I've seen is $15. There are some on eBay for crazy low prices...

    Recirculation techniques

I have tried a few ways of recirculation, all of which seem to be a little more work than they should. I'm considering using direct pumping, but I'm a little apprehensive. Don't want to cause a stuck runoff. What do you use?

    How do you kettle hop?

I have been using pellets in the kettle for quite a while, but have seen too much wasted wort lately. My last batch lost at least a half gallon of wort because my whirlpool simply did not concentrate the hops to the center of the kettle. I only had 4 ounces of pellets in the kettle. What do...

    Recirc without grant

Do you guys with single tier systems use pumps to recirc straight from the tun, through the pump then back on top of the mash? I have been going into the kettle as a grant, but balancing two flow rates have been difficult to manage. I'm using 1/2" tubing and a March 809 pump. Go without a...

    It's a sign...

I was picking a show for my daughter to watch so I could research cider recipes. She requester "My Little Pony." This happens to be today's episode. Surely it's a sign.
