    Used whirlfloc with disasterous results.

So I tried whirlfloc for the first time tonight. I do partial mashes on the stove (BIAB). Tonight I used 8lbs of grain and 7lbs of DME. I mashed in kettle one (2.5gal) and sparged in kettle two (1.75gal). I combined and added water till I hit 3.75gal. Normally, using that much grain means I...

Can I brew today? Incomplete starter.

So I want to brew a "freezer cleaner" ale today. I'm using old grains and old yeast (WLP099, Best by Jul 20th). Wed night I made a 3L, 1.040 starter and now (about 36hrs after pitching) I am down to 1.024. By 10pm tonight (48hrs after pitching), will I be able to pitch into a 5gal, 1.050 OG...

On brew days, I drink my yeast starter.

So I normally make 3L starters. I let them ferment out and cold crash them in the fridge for a few days. On brew day, I decant 2L of liquid into an insulated container (too keep it cool for a while) and about .75L down the drain. Since I use plain extra light DME for my starters and no hops...

    Weihenstephan oktoberfest yeast?

So I'm looking to make The Kaiser Imperial Oktoberfest that Avery made available. http://averybrewing.com/brewery/recipes-for-homebrewers/ When I search Weihenstephan yeast, I come up with WY-3068, a German wheat beer yeast. Is that what I am supposed to use...

    Stupid twist top bottles.

I had one 22oz twist top make its way into my clean batch of bottles when bottling my IPA a couple weeks ago. Well sometime over night it popped off, so now I am having flat IPA for breakfast. Side note: My IPA looks almost like a brown ale! I don't know why it's so dark. It's...

    Moonlight's Desire mead.

The recipe was posted in another thread, so I decided to use it for my very first mead. http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/pages/community/news/show?title=romance-by-the-glass So between the sticky FAQ and the thread above, I have a pretty good idea about how to make this, but I still...

    Yeast viability calculators?

Is there a yeast viability calculator that can be used for yeast at or above room temp? I have a shipment that's been stuck in Reno since Thursday due to the bombing in Boston with no ETA (it was supposed to be today).

    Rye saison?

For Avery's 18th anniversary, they released a dry hopped rye saison. I loved it, although it does get mixed reviews. Digging through the recipes on here, there is the 2011 HBT rye saison that looks interesting. To modify it a little and hopefully get it closer to the Avery brew, what do you...

    Whoops, I over carbed.

I forget how many vol's I carbed this quad to, but I want to say 3.3-3.5. I always use one PET bottle so I can check carb levels as time goes on. Eventually it got rock hard, harder than any pop bottle I've felt. At that point, I got scared that I might start blowing bottles, so I put them all...

    Wort losses with IPAs. Wow!

So I brewed my first IPA yesterday - 6.5gal boil, and evaporated about 1.5gal. I chilled the wort and let it settle for about 3-4hrs before racking to my fermenter. I was only able to get about 3.5gal before getting a bunch of "crap" moving through the racking tube. There was a lot of hop...

Four horsemen of the apocalypse brews

I'm trying to come up with four recipes, one representing each of the four horses. First I need to come up with a certain style and then I can figure out a recipe. White Horse: The white rider is referred to as Conquest. This needs to be "winning" as Charlie Sheen would say. It also has to be...

    Any snow brews going on?

Any brewing going on with all the snow fall and businesses shut down? I almost brewed an imperial IPA, had the hops and yeast, but the LHBS was closed.

    Belgium imperial stout for beginners.

I brewed this in May of '12. It's fantastic and easy for a beginner. It was my 2nd non-Mr.Beer brew. Ingredients. 1st step: Buy the Northern Brew imperial stout kit. 2nd step: Buy 3.3lbs dark LME, 0.5lb Special B, 2oz medium toasted oak cubes, and unsweetened baker's chocolate at the grocery...

    Brewing a mephistopheles inspired beer.

As taken from this thread, I am about to brew this beer and wanted to keep notes about the process in case it turns out great or horrible...a year from now. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f68/mephistopheles-stout-41966/ Picked up all of my ingredients from Northernbrewer and my LHBS...

    BIG barleywine recommendations?

I’m looking for a BIG barleywine to drink for my 5th wedding anniversary Nov 27th, 2014, so I’d like one that isn’t reaching its peak at 1yr, but instead will reach it in 18-24mo. I saw Northern brewer had a barleywine kit (the recommended yeast is a blend including brett), but I don’t know how...

If I order malt from northern brewer...

...will it come individually bagged? For example, if I order a pound of crystal, a pound of something else, and then 10lbs of pale malt, will they be in their own bag, or will they crush everything into one bag? Thanks for the help. I'm looking to do my first partial mash, but I've never...

    1yr since I recieved my Mr.Beer, I learned...

I am so glad I got one of those for Christmas. I brewed 1 "kit" and then brewed 5 or 6 more of the custom recipes where you had to buy multiple different cans and use home ingredients. They were great, but expensive. So I looked around and found out I could brew 5gal for just a little more than...

    Should I pasteurize?

It's been about 4wks since I brewed this beer and I have some airlock activity again (2 to 3 bubbles a min). If I have an infection, can I pasteurize (heat on stove, but not boil it) it to kill off the bad stuff? Back story: Too keep it cool, I fermented in the garage and on my way to work...

    8wks bottled and no carbonation.

Well, it's a little over 8wks, but close enough. Here's the vital info. Brewed tripel with 1.080OG. Used Wyeast 3787 Fermented roughly 3wks. Secondary on orange zest for 5wks. Bottled using close to 3/4cup table sugar. Stored downstairs for 3wks in the mid to upper 60's. Brought...

    Sub'ing ingredients in Czar stout?

I am trying to get the ingredients bought to brew Avery's Czar stout, but Austin homebrew does not carry the exact grains. Looking at the recipe below, do you think this will change the flavor much? OG: 1.104 AE: 1.025 Grist: Pale 2-Row – 86.8% (18.1lb) (13.57lb light LME) Cara-8...
