Winterized Hops: Mold on Soil ?

I've never had a problem with keeping my hops outside in their pots over winter. Been doing it for 5 years and it does get below zero for stretches here in St. Louis. Just leave them outside they will be fine.

Are my Columbus ready fo rharvest?

I grow Columbus and find them to be my favorite. They are much more resiny than Cascade and Centennial so don't worry about that. If they are papery sounding and have that pungent smell I say pickem!

need help - hop leaves keep turning brown

If those are lower leaves and the plant is throwing burrs this is normal. If there are no burrs yet then just give the plant a little bit of fertilizer.

On vacation for a week and hops are looking sad...any idea whats going on?

You have insect damage. Spray some neem oil on them once a week.

Solstice is 4 weeks away. How much growth to expect

I use Fish Emulsion 5-1-1 and then switch to an organic granular called Flower Power at 3-6-4 I believe it is. I am in Sunset Hills. Growing Nugget, Centennial, Columbus, and Neo1.

Solstice is 4 weeks away. How much growth to expect

I am in St. Louis myself in the S. County area. I can tell you that this year our spring was colder than normal so growth has been stunted a bit. We are about 2 weeks behind normal growing conditions. Every year is different. I just applied some fish fertilizer today to help with nitrogen as...

    Post Harvest Plant Care?

Leave your bines attached and no need to fertilize since they will not use it anyway. Just keep them watered till the leaves die off. When all is brown cut at ground level and wait till spring. First year plants are treated differently than others. Second year you can just harvest and cut at...

    First year growing...

Centennial cones are not big but small and compact. You do not need a fan to dry your hops. A screen and a cool dry place is fine.

If you were going to grow something other than Willamette?

Try Nugget or Neomexicana 1. I grow those two along with Cascade, Centennial, and Columbus. Nugget is doing well in its second year and Neo 1 is doing great in its 1st year. I don't dare try anything that cannot handle the hot weather. The three C's are all doing great in their second year...

My plants got mixed up! Please help

Good luck on that one. Only difference I can tell is that Cascade is usually a better producer with bigger cones than Centennial. You cannot really tell the difference in the two visually. Centennial is nicknamed a "super cascade". So they are similar. Just use them together in a brew and...

    Has anyone grown Neomexicana hops?

It has reached the top of 16 ft. ropes and is throwing sidearms and spurs. Doing really well. It is not exposed to full sun but more filtered sun.

    Has anyone grown Neomexicana hops?

I have an experimental Neo-1 that I am growing and it is doing very well for a 1st year here in St. Louis!

Time to trim 2nd year hops. Help!

2nd year I would go 3 bines per rope, 2 ropes per plant.

Trim the bulls or trim all?

Bulls are the first to come up and are hollow making them susceptible to breaking and don't produce cones as well as a normal bine. Cut the first growth back to eliminate them. It is common practice.

    Trim back second year hops?

Wingnutt73 I was just trying to help a fellow St. Louisan out. Don't be a forum cop. Seriously.

    Bull Shoots VS Normal Bines

Bull shoots are much easier to identify as the crown ages. They are always the first to sprout and when you cut them they are hollow inside. I cut them at soil level after they get over a foot and continue to select what I want to keep a good month after. Then I train. It works.

    Trim back second year hops?

Kryptonite1055 I would not clip any first year shoots. Let the plant develop a nice root system in the first year. I grow in 20 gallon containers. My cascade, centennial, and columbus all produced cones in the first year. My nugget did not but had the strongest root system developed. Let...
