    Diagnose my hops disease

The leafs turn brown gradually until they die. All the while there is plenty of new growth coming in, even on the same bine, but the older bines with cones are browning severely. It seems like a deficiency.

    wine bladders

Does anyone use wine boxes to package cider or wine or barleywine? I can't seem to find a place to buy new empty wine boxes. I could reuse wine boxes buy it takes me a long time to drink 5l of cheap wine.

top came off my Firestone keg

The top of one of my kegs came off. I was surprised to find that the whole top is apparently just glued on. I would have expected some metal reinforcement to be welded to the keg under the rubber. I actually like the keg this way because it seems cleaner, but I can't pick it up now when it is...

    calculations help

I thought I understood this by now. Tell me where I am going wrong. I want 19l of 12% beer. Suppose I get 70% efficiency. Then I need 19*0.12/0.70=3.25kg of grain. So that's what I bought, and I am mashing now, but every online calculator says that I am only going to get 1.037 rather...

    best cigarettes

I am surprised we don't have a tobacco forum, did I miss it? What are the best cigarettes that are commonly available? Is there really a difference among them, or is it all fashion? I haven't done much smoking in 10 years or so and back then I just bummed whatever I could get.

opening CO2 tank valve all the way...important?

I work in industry and I have always been taught that the correct way to open valves is to turn them counter clockwise until they stop, and then turn them slightly back clockwise. This prevents the valve from getting stuck or jammed into the open position. When somebody else comes along later...

who knew oxi clean was carcinogenic

http://www.sustainablebabysteps.com/oxiclean.html Clearly this is a tree hugger site, and they are guilty of sensationalism, but the bit about the surfactants did make me think a second, partly because I don't really know enough to call BS on the particular chemicals being safe or dangerous...

North Carolina FS 30oz paintball CO2 tank

$25 free domestic shipping Here is a luxfer 68 cu. in. Fiber - wrapped 3000psi tank with a standard CO2 pin valve. This tank will hold 30 oz of CO2. That's great for going a very long time between CO2 fills compared to 20oz tanks. For paintball use, even if you don't fill it with the full...

    are secondary regulators actually different?

Are secondary regulators actually different internally, or do they just have different fittings? If I want to use a primary regulator as a secondary, could I just unscrew the tank fitting and screw a barb in?

    cold crashing too long?

I fermented an ale then set my freezer to just above freezing a few days ago. Based on my schedule I won't be able to rack it to keg for a while. Is it a problem to store beer at near-freezing for an extended period? Does the beer age at all at that temperature?

good universal fermentation time for ales

Since I started fermenting in sealed stainless fermenters I can't see my fermentation well. I am also a slacker and I don't want the hassle of drawing gravity samples at least 2 times to verify fermentation is finished. So I am thinking about just fermenting everything a "long time" so that I...

accidentally used "weed and feed" on hops

I just planted 4 rhizomes per lhbs recommendation. I mixed 50/50 natural soil and potting soil then put the rhizome very shallow and covered with mulch. Then I spread a small handful of granular fertilizer in a circle around the plant, and watered it all generously. Then I saw the fertilizer I...

    No-chill and aeration

After boiling, there is almost no oxygen in wort. Also, you are not supposed to aerate hot wort. So, what do no-chillers do about wort oxygenation? Do you just not aerate, then RDWHAHB?

    Why are contactors 24VAC?

All the 2-pole, 30A contactors I can find at Grainger are 24VAC. I would prefer 12 or 24 volts DC so I can use a common swithmode wall plug to get the DC and not have to mess with a transformer. What are other brewers using?

    Temperature control accuracy

Technical question: I'm making a 5-gallon reservoir of tempered water, heated with a hot-water-heater slement. It won't be used for brewing but the application is extremely similar to the hot liquor tank...a source of stable tempered water for heat exchange at 28C. My question is, how...

How many watts to warm an outdoor fermfreezer

I have a 7 cu ft GE freezer outside on my patio. Will 100W be enough to keep the inside at ale temps through the North Carolina winter? It may get down to freezing temps, but not consistently as far as I know (i just moved here).

    Non-hoppy APA?

Is there such a thing as a non-hoppy APA? I've been looking for examples of American Pale Ale that lean toward malty rather than hoppy. With the IPA craze going on, most of the pale ales I get seems to have a bitter character and dry-hoppy hop aroma. SNPA, for example, is just a lite IPA to...
