Alberta changes laws and let's almost anyone sell beer!

Before a couple weeks ago, you had to have a minimum volume capacity of 24000 liters per year to sell beer, they removed that, and now the only requirements are a business license and a food safe area to get a liquor license! I can start selling my brew! Now to find the time to brew for myself...

    planning a homestead, suggestions?

My wife and I are looking at moving out of our small city into the country. We'd be building our own house (I'm in construction so no issue), and want to start raising our own chickens/cow/pigs and have a greenhouse to grow year round. Our goal is to be quasi self sufficient. Anybody else...

want to smoke meat, etiquette in a townhouse?

I live in a row style townhouse, and would like to get into smoking meat. Is there any way to do this without pissing off my neighbour's?

visiting Killeen, Texas from Western Canada. what to drink?

I'm here in Killeen for a few days visiting family. There's a ton of beer I've never tried from down south and can't get from where I'm from. What to try? I've tried shiner now. But don't know what else is worth buying. Please advise!

    carbonation for competition

I keg, and rarely bottle, when I do I use a homebuilt bottling device courtesy of HBT. I'm thinking about entering some competitions, but because I care all my beers at the same level, and don't get perfect carbing when I bottle, im worried that even if I send a good beer, bad carbonation...

    differences in brewing costs

I'm noticing a lot of people saying how they have spent $70-$90 on ingredients for a HG all grain batch. I live on the prairies, so maybe I'm lucky, and can buy 50lb bags of 2-row for $22, and even if I'm buying specialty malts by the lb from my LBHS, I'm not paying more than a $2.50ish a lb...

Using hydronic heating loop to brew

My wife and I are designing our next house, and we would like to put a hydronic heating system in rather than a forced air. For those not familiar, it uses loops of water lines installed in the floor of the entire house, filled with a water/glycol mix and heated by an on demand water system...

Reason for secondary, and stirring the sediment

I brew a lot of beer, but my wife and I are just on our second batch of wine (from a kit) . I usually take a RDWHAH approach, and don't even use a secondary for my beer. I keg straight out of the primary and use the keg to clear the beer. However, with wine, I see that after transferring to the...

    beer/wine/bread cross contamination

I have wine and beer sitting right beside each other, and I have to transfer both today. As well, my wife is making bread today, and you can smell the yeast everywhere. Do I need to be worried about cross contamination of yeasts?

    HBT collective wisdom

Post a quick tidbit on what's made brewing easier/your beer better. Don't start an argument with your comment, this thread is just to condense the wisdom of HBT in one place! I'll start. Don't depend on airlock activity to know if fermentation is active/finished, use a hydrometer!

    crushed oats, no cereal mash

My wife has a flour mill so we have various whole grains sitting around the house. I made an oatmeal stout, which worked out very nicely if I may say so myself, and rather than use flaked oats, I ran some hulled oats through my barley crusher and threw them in my mash. I have since learned...

kegged beer, didnt purge airspace, oxidation?

So, my wife and I just had a baby a few weeka ago, and last weekend I kegged 2 beers I've got going. Unfortunately, I was pretty tired and completely forgot to purge the airspace in the keg before I force carbonated them. There wasn't that much airspace, I filled them up pretty high, maybe a...

How long can I leave a keg tapped?

I have only been kegging for a few months, and just use picnic taps on my corny kegs in my garage fridge. However I haven't been able to find any information on how long I can leave the taps connected to the kegs? Is there a risk of infection after a certain amount of time? Does the line add...

    Extremely tart blonde ale, causes?

I tried BierMuncher's "Centennial Blonde" recipe with a few tweaks of my own. The tweaks are mainly due to a desire to use ingredients I had on hand. Here's what I did 7.00 lb Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM) 0.75 lb Cara-Pils/Dextrine (2.0 SRM) 0.50 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt - 40L (10.0 SRM)...

Hard Lemonade carbonation, with no C02 gear

I'm a beer guy, but decided to give hard lemonade a try for my wife, and whoever comes over who doesn't like beer. I read a few threads on the forums here, and decided on a recipe. Using some champagne yeast, I whipped it up, and let it ferment. A week later, I began to think about the fact that...

    Mashtun design

Hey, I've been doing all grain batches for a while, and have a nice big cooler for my mash, but I have yet to put a drain system in, I just use the built in drain on the end. This doesn't result in the best efficiency, and I'm sure I'm throwing out tons of good stuff because it doesn't drain...

    My new immersion cooler

I got tired of carrying 5 gallons of boiling wort to the bathtub, so I finally built this. 50ft of 3/8" copper with angled fittings on the end. There's a 3/8 to 3/4" hose adapter on each fitting, and I use an 8 ft washing machine hose on each side to my sink. I usually brew in the kitchen (no...

Grain crusher used for oat rolling

I'm looking at purchasing some sort of grain crusher. I'm not 100% sure which one yet, but at this point I'm not too concerned about the brand. I'm more concerned about the function. My wife and I are also looking at getting an oat roller so we can buy sacks of oats to make oatmeal with (for...
