    TRB Brown Recipe - Saison?

I accidentally bought double the grain for this beer. Does anyone think if did half of it with a saison yeast it would be good? I have a few sour blends/cultures so could do 10 gallons of sour stuff, but was hoping to get something with a little faster turnaround.

    Improving one-dimensional beer

I have a 2 month old golden sour, brewed 12/19/16 OG= 1.050, fermented with WY3711 (I know, not the best choice, but it's all I had), and pitched some lacto p capsules (IBU = 2). Gravity at transfer to secondary was 1.005 and pH 3.87 on 1/4/17 where I added TYB Brussels Blend. I checked on it...

Sacc + Brett vs Sacc then Brett

I'm doing an experiment to learn the difference between co-pitching a Sacc and Brett strain compared to letting the Sacc go first then with Brett in secondary. My question is how to handle the Sacc/Brett batch? Should I leave in primary the whole time? Rack to secondary when primary is almost...

    Building "secondary" chamber

I have a cold garage, but am making a lot of sours lately. Im going to build a "fermentation-type" chamber in which I'll build the walls out with insulation board underneath a workbench. My question is, what is the best/most efficient way to keep the box warm? My garage is about 43 right now...

Low IBU or No IBU for Sour Beer

Planning my first batch of sour beer (10 gal) that will be split with a couple of different yeast's from Yeast Bank (Brussels Brett blend and Amalgamation) after a quick hit with lacto and then a Sacc strain. My question is, I see a lot of recipes where some brewers do low amounts of IBUs...

    Lacto Starter Smell

Making a lacto starter from wort and crushed grain. I was supposed to brew a kettle sour about 2 weeks ago, but life got in the way and it didn't happen. I'm making more starter wort tonight to feed it and it smells pretty bad. Also, can't tell if the top is just a pellicle or mold. Should I...

Whole Fruit vs Pressed or Juiced

Which way is the best/most consistent way to flavor? Would I get more flavor out of pressed or juiced fruits, or just adding them whole?

    Fermentation In Buckets

Wanting to step up to 3-5 gallon batches and the first one I did molded. I had the lid on the bucket and laid a bar towel over the airlock hole (which is maybe why it molded, maybe I had some old bugs in the bucket and didn't clean well enough). Either way, I'm wondering what people use to cover...

    Unscrewinm valve from manifold

I bought a y-adapter to add to my 3 port manifold. Only issue, is that I can seem to unscrew any of the check valves from the manifold. Does anyone have any tips? Main problem is probably that I don't have a vice.

    Beer line, does it carbonate?

Random q, couldn't find anything on the interwebs: does the beer in the beer lines carbonate like the rest of the keg? If I take an early sample from the keg, is the beer in the line at the same carb level as in the keg?

    Container to store specialty grains?

I just moved to a new state, and with that comes a new brew store. My old one had a much bigger selection of grains and you could measure out the exact amount of any grain that you needed. Now, the selection is more limited, and they only sell in 1 lb bags. So my question is, does anyone have a...

    Homegrown Hops and Usage: Success?

Starting to grow hops this year and have been reading threads non-stop about growing. I did notice a couple of people mention that their hops aren't as pungent as the commercailly available ones. I am just wondering what kind of success people have with their own hops? Are they as good as...

I'm moving to Cary in about a month (from CO) for a job at WakeMed and I couldnt find a run down of the water report here on HBT. So I emailed them and thought I'd share what they said back: Na 28.7 Ca 8.4 Mg 2.98 Cl 20.8 Sulfate 31 Alkalinity (as CaCO3) 37.3 I couldnt get any info on...

    Keg Lid-leak Solutions?

I've got a new keg and today when I was sanitizing it and putting it under pressure I noticed there was a leak on the lid. I tried adding more keg lube to the o-ring as well as adding some lube to the inside of the keg where the o-ring would be in contact with the keg. Neither worked at stopping...

    Aurora/Denver: split beer glassware?

My wife and I really enjoy drinking out of our 10oz glasses, unfortunately we have broken 2 this year and only have two left. We were trying to look online for some more but they aren't a good price. They is a restaurant supply store off of 6th/225 and they have some good glasses. However, you...

    10-gal batch, multiple sparges

Going to make a 10 gallon batch with 20.83 lbs of grain. My cooler wont be able to fit the wanted 8.9 gallons of strike water. All I can fit is about 6.4 gallons, so I'll have to sparge with 8.5 gallons (I plan on doing 2-4.25 gal sparges). Does anyone see any problems with this? The mash...

    Help

So, I bought some kegs from a vendor here in town. He told me they had been cleaned and only needed to sanitized before use. It was stupid of me to listen and not clean them myself, but what's done is done. Now, I just took a sample from the keg that has been sitting in my garage for a week...

    Dosconnect question

I have newly started kegging and today when I disconnect my pin lock gas line (been on gas for about 10 days now) there was the hiss of gas escaping. I'm pretty sure it was from the pin lock side, but I also didn't turn the co2 tank off. Do I need to replace the poppet? Look for leaks? Thanks!

    What to do in Raleigh

I'll be in Raleigh over the weekend of the 20th as I have job interviews on Friday and Monday. Does anybody have any good recommendations for beer bars/brew pubs/restaraunts/breweries that I can do on Friday night and Saturday? Thanks!
