    Hydrometers are fragile...

Fragile, yes. But never broke one and wasn't about to when I moved this last July. So I carefully wrapped it up and boxed it for the move. Only problem is now I can't remember which box it was in. Still can't find the dang thing. It's gotta be in some unpacked box somewhere in the basement...

Wisconsin homebrew fermentation in winter / Brewer's Best Belgian Golden Ale

Hey Yooper, does your cheapie aquarium heater have a temp control? Or do you use a regulator with it? I'm another WI brewer with a cold winter basement and always looking for a new (better) way of maintaining low-to-mid-60s...

American Brown Ale Swamp Nut Brown Ale

FINALLY picked up the ingredients for this after months of procrastinating. This looks awesome. Gonna go with S-04 though, like wormraper. Really looking forward to drinking one of these.

    Quick late extract addition question

Hey Yooper I ended up adding the hops right before flameout and the last half of the LME at flameout. It is happily sitting in my swamp cooler in the basement at 64 (temp strip reading). Thanks again everyone!

    Quick late extract addition question

Excellent advice, guys. I will add the hops at 3-5 minutes and 1/2 the LME at flame out (first half of LME is boiling as I write this). Did this kit once before and loved it, but want to start doing late extract additions to help with the color and possible off flavors. This forum really is...

    Quick late extract addition question

Okay so take off the burner, add the LME, put back on burner, bring to boil and THEN boil for ten minutes? Or is the ten minutes include the time to take it off the heat, etc.? Thanks!!!

    Quick late extract addition question

Hi guys, making NB Sierra Madre as I write this. Want to add half the LME at flame out but instructions say to add the 2oz of Cascade at flameout. Okay to both both things at the same time? Thank yet again...

Smacked pack of Wyeast 1335 British Ale...okay to save???

Thanks, freisste. Looking forward to going BIAB someday soon! Should I throw this yeast away and get a new one?

Smacked pack of Wyeast 1335 British Ale...okay to save???

Hi all, Yesterday my step son bought NB's Surly Bitter and smacked the pack of 1335 – only then to open the box and find it's a partial mash kit. We are unfamiliar with partial mashes, being new brewers with only extract kit experience, and didn't have the time yesterday to read how to do it...

    Help! Where to store bottles?

Hi gang, I'm 6 extract kit batches in and have a Q. Regardless of yeast type I have been pitching in the low sixties and ferment in the basement at 62-67 as read on the temp strip (67 at peak) for around two weeks, slowly bring in up to around 67-68 for another week or so. Check the FG, bottle...

First Brew-what to expect with age

+1 to what everyone says, especially uniondr. I'm a noob too, with only 6 extracts under my belt. First was the NB Caribou like you. Mine was in the primary for 3 weeks and I skipped the secondary. Had my first bottle at 2 weeks – good but very sweet. At three weeks it was still a bit too...

My new vinator – why didn't I buy one of these sooner?!?

No questions, just a happy new brewer comment... I did the full dunk approach to sanitize my bottles with my first two batches. Then I moved to the spray bottle technique for the next two batches. And now I finally bought a vinator from NB to try on my fifth batch. Wow! Holy time-saver...

    Wyeast 1084 fermentation temp question

Thanks for the response. Do you think I'd be better off fermenting it upstairs with an ambient of 66/67 in a swamp cooler (plastic tub with water and rotating out soda bottles filled with ice)? If so, what temp should I shoot for on the temp strip on the carboy? Thanks again!

    Wyeast 1084 fermentation temp question

Hi guys, Will be brewing my 3rd batch this weekend: NB's Irish Stout using 1084. Wyeast's recomended temp range is 62-72, and I was planning on fermenting in my basement that has an ambient temp of 60/61 right now. Will that be too cold for this yeast? I plan to bring the carboy upstairs...

2nd brew coming up – temp questions

Hi guys, I'm planning on my second batch this weekend and have a few questions I was hoping you could help with. All went well with my first brew, NB CS, except I fermented in a 66-67 ambient temp closet (thanks, poor NB instructions!). Not terrible, and looks like it'll turn out good. Oh...

Quick noob question: water needed on both chambers of air lock?

Thanks much Tupperwolf. I could easily be bubble hypnotised too!

Quick noob question: water needed on both chambers of air lock?

Hi guys. Long time lurker and finally brewed my first batch yesterday. Fermenting up a storm in the carboy and all is going well...but I noticed that the sanitised water in the first chamber (first one escaping gasses would pass through) is gone. The second chamber still has water in it and...
