    Irish Red---Please Critique

I am looking at trying to brew a Irish Red on St. Patty's day. Trying to do something similar to a Saranac Irish Red if you've had one. Somewhat on the sweeter side, malty, almost no hop presence. I wonder if I've got to many things going on here? Here's my idea: 5 Gal. 5.3 %...

    California common schedule-help!!

Hey all. I have a batch of California common going right now. It's sitting at about 64 and bubbling every once and while. It's been there for a week now. What do I do next? transfer it? Lager it? I have read so many different things, but they seem to be contradictory. Anyone done this that can...

    Anyone ever seen this?

So yesterday was a pretty lousy brew day. Temps fluctuated ( need a new thermometer). Forget to set boil timer and then realized my chiller was not at my house. Awesome. So, I covered up the keggle, set it on cold concrete jn my garage and let in cool slowly. I did some reading about no chill...

Stepping up a starter- process question

I have a 1L starter going now, but I'd like to step it up to a 2 or 3 larger if possible. What am I curious about, is whether I can decant, brew another small wort, and repitch in the same 1L flask? Will it continue to grow at the same rate with fresh wort, even in the same vessel?

    Homemade Vanilla Extract

Has anyone used homemade extract (vodka and beans) added at bottling, rather than primary? I just some as a gift and I think it would be awesome in a stout I have brewing.

To belt, or not to belt, that is the question.

Hey everyone! So I have a stout in my basement that is 2 weeks old. I used wyeast northwest ale yeast in it. Everything looks ok, and it's got a nice Krausen on top. No airlock activity, but that's to be expected. The temperature of the basement is 62 degrees. I have a brew belt, thanks to...

    Mashing in a Keggle

Hey all. I am curious about tying to mash in a keggle. All of the false bottoms that I have seen have a piece of pipe that connect up to the ball valve. That's against gravity? Do you need a pump to do it, or am I missing something?

    Critique my porter recipe (please)

I put together a porter recipe with advice from others on this site, and info from the Anchor site, for a version of a porter similar to theirs. I Plugged it into brew pal for some help, but I'd love some more experienced brewers to weigh in. It doesn't have to be spot on, just a in the...

    Archor porter

Hey all. I really like Anchor Porter and I'd like to brew something similar. Does any have any information on what it might use as a grain bill? It seems to very rich, but lacking in the smoky, or burnt flavors that other porters feature. I'd like to make something easy drinking, dark, but not...

Who's brewing this thanksgiving (or the day after)?

Anyone doing a Thanksgiving brew session? I am introducing my brother-in-law to it, (homebrewing) and brewing a SNPA clone. I wonder what the best Thanksgiving themed beer would be?

    Simple Carboy? Anyone tried this?

Hey all! Has anyone used the cylindrical Poland Springs bottles as a pilot primary? I am trying out ciders in them and they seemed to be working so far. Any thoughts, or experience?

    Cold crashing

Hey all. I have an ipa that is just about done dry hoping, and after several batches, I finally feel as though I have some idea of what I doing. ( sort of). I'd like to cold crash this before I bottle and prime. The outside temp is ideal for it right now, so it should be easy to do. My question...

    I'm fixin' a hole...

I have a new keggle and I'd like to drill two thermometer holes for different size boils. Is there an easily found plug that doesn't have to be ordered? I have a Bilchmann brewmomter if that matters. Does the material matter? Thanks!

    Secondary and trub

Hey all! I just transferred a ipa into a secondary to dry hop it. I was really careful not to grab any trub when auto-siphoning out the beer. I checked the gravity and it was about 5 points off from target. I am assuming that it will finish out when dry hopping, but my question is: will there be...

How to carbonate a non-backsweetened cider?

Hey all, I am total rookie brewer. I've got a batch of dry cider that I want to bottle and carbonate. Can someone give me a definitive and hopefully experienced answer on how to do it without pasteurizing it ? It's hit final gravity and has been sitting for about 2 months. I'd like to give it...

    Super Hopped- Big Mistake

So I was making my first ipa last night, an accidentally added 2 oz of chinook, instead of 1.25 for the 60 min addition. I calculated the IBU at 80. What will this come out like? I planning on dry hopping with centennial and cascade, but is this going to be a palate wrecker?

Which do you drink first, commercial or hb?

I've noticed that when j get a chance to have a beer, i tend to save homebrew for some reason, and drink commercial stuff. Part of it comes from a desire to see how it improves, but also I think it's due to the effort and patience required. Anyone else have this problem?

    1.00 gravity?

I just took a gravity reading on a week only cider. It was 1.00, maybe even lower with the meniscus. Is that normal? It smelled crazy. No sweetness at all. It's definitely going into winter hibernation. Hopefully it's not vinegar.

    Toasted Oats

I am brewing a southern brown ale this weekend and I have been considering adding some toasted flaked oats to add a bit more mouthfeel. Does this sound like a stupid idea?

    Finishing temp?

Hello all. I just transferred a Irish red with an abv of 6.8% to secondary. It is near fg now, but I wondered if raising the temp would be a good way to clean up the final flavors. I used 2 packets of well activated safale-05. It fermented at 68 for 2 weeks.
