NE IPA with Irish Ale Yeast

Before I try it, I wonder if anyone has tried making a NE IPA with WLP004, Wyeast 1084 or OYL-005. Seems worth trying, but I am a little concerned about Diacetyl.

    Wort Filtration Before Plate Chiller

I have been using a plate chiller for a few years in conjunction with a March pump. I love how ridiculously fast it chills, but I have yet to find a kettle filter that does not also clog frequently and/or reduce hop utilization. Here is what I've tried: Hop Spider Hop basket (I've tried...

How Do You Design Beer Recipes (Poll)?

What primary tool do you use to formulate your beer recipes? Apologies in advance if I've missed one that is widely used. This will be helpful as I work on a project for my homebrew club. Thanks for responding.

    Chapman ThermoBarrel Reviews

I received my 10G ThermoBarrel on Saturday and put it to use for the first time on Monday. Here are my thoughts. If you have one, reply with your experience. val214 did a great job capturing pics already, so I won't bother posting mine...

    Castle Pilsen Acidified?

I've brewed 3 batches with Castle Pilsen and all three ended up with a low mash pH. #1 and #2: Target pH: 5.30. Actual pH: 5.09 (59% Castle Pilsen) #3: Target pH: 5.40. Actual pH: 5.16 (70% Castle Pilsen) Seems like the malt is heavily acidified. Has anyone else had a similar...

Spike Brewing - Sight Glass Performance

Can anyone report on the performance the sight glass on Spike kettles? Specifically, does the wort inside the sight glass move around a lot during the boil? I have a Blichmann kettle. The sight glass useless during the boil.

    Stainless or Chrome Hardware

This is why I prefer stainless. After only a couple years in service, the chrome has worn off this chrome plated brass tailpiece.

Cold Plate Jockey Box Build Step-by-Step

Since I had not found any really good jockey box build tutorials, I thought I would write one. I will not address the cold plate vs. coil debate, because that is covered extensively elsewhere. I will only say that I went for a cold plate, because I found that it offers the most bang for the...

    Beer Line for Jockey Box

I purchased a cold plate. The seller confirmed the tubing is 5/16", but didn't specify ID or OD. I assume it's OD. That would provide resistance of .5 psi/ft. I'm thinking about using 1/4" ID beer line, since it has the closest resistance (.7 psi/ft). Is that the best way to go?

    Building a Jockey Box

Looking for advice on building a jockey box. I'm am leaning toward using a coil instead of a cold plate, because everything I've read says a coil works better. The catch is that I want to serve 4 products, fit inside a normal size cooler and not spend a totally outrageous amount of money...

Odd Keg - Heintz Division, Kelsey-Hayes Co.

I recently received a 3 gallon pin-lock keg stamped with "Heintz Division, Kelsey-Hayes Co." as (I assume) the manufacturer. I'm looking to pick up some replacement parts and am wondering about compatibility. Anyone familiar with this manufacturer? The funny thing is: this 3 gallon keg is...

    Options for Extended Aging

I use Better Bottles for fermentation and then rack to a cornie keg for any additional aging. Now that I am thinking about starting some sours, I will need to purchase more containers for extended aging. I don't love the idea of tying up a keg for a year or more. So my options seem to be...

New Homebrew Club in Jo Co, KS

Now that normal club activities are legal in KS, I have been talking to some guys about starting a club in Johnson County. We'll obviously be looking for folks to join. PM me if you're interested. One of the LHBS's has offered their location as an initial meeting place.

    Calculating Carbonation from Gravity Drop

Is there a formula that can be used to calculate the carbonation level that is achieved by x points decrease in SG for a given volume of beer? Reason I want to know: I racked a batch to a keg and commenced dry hopping at room temp. 12 days later I found that the keg was very carbonated...

I'm not really a beer snob

I've been lurking for a while, but thought it was time to write a brief intro. I started homebrewing on 11/11/11. Just brewed batch 32 last weekend. I built a 6 tap keezer in January, then added a Nitro tank in March just in time for my annual St Patricks day party. All-grain brewer...

    Drippy Stout Faucet

I installed this stainless stout faucet in January: http://www.stainlessbrewing.com/Stainless-Stout-Faucet_p_142.html It drips for a long time after I use it. If I pull a pint in the evening, I will find a fairly large dried pool of stout on my drip tray in the morning. Is that common for...

Kansas Homebrewers - Proposed Law Change

Just this week in KS, new legislation is being proposed to amend the law to allow consumption by non-family members and at other locations besides the maker's home--including in competitions. I urge KS residents to contact their legislative representatives to encourage them to support the...
