Zombie hops?

I have a first-year Santiam that died off totally down to the bine, it was about a foot or so high. It's been leafless for a week or two, and now suddenly, has tiny leaves coming off the bine about 1"up. What happened to this plant do you think? I thought it was bugs or something, but the other plants by it are all fine, except for one super slow grower i asked about in another thread.

Could be due to a lot of things. It is not uncommon for stressed plants to suddenly die off only to rebud later on. I have a Goldings hop that did that, don't know if I'll get any cones from it this year, though I was glad to see it didn't die completely.
