THis may be a stupid question, but I think it's really cool when I can make a brew with all my own stuff. Like growing your own hops. Is it possible to grow/breed your own yeast?

I mean yeast is everywhere right. It bacteria. Is it possible to make your own or is it too dangerous to do I your not a pro.

If so, how do you grow it?

Well if you really want go breed your own yeast you first need to find yourself a stud, then wait until the female yeast are in heat. Then show them a video of an airlock bubbling (its like porn to them) to set the mood. Then its up to them.

I think I'm am going to try this on a much smaller scale.

I am gonna make a mini beer ( just like a yeast starter w/o the yeast) Then let it sit out overnight. Hopefully it will grab some yeast, then I'll put it in my flask with a airlock. If I get some yeast......I'm gonna try to use it in my next batch

Once you get your bearings a little bit, you could try farming it and freezing. Check out the link in my signature or check out the frozen yeast bank thread.

You can't see me but my hands are applauding you sir. Thanks a lot. I will definitely invest in these items when I get more into it. It would be great to have my OWN yeast strand from Maryland.

I brew this one beer everyone loves. It has OLD BAY in it. If you don't know what OLD BAY is, it's a seasoning Marylanders put on everything but mostly crabs.

It would be great to make a beer from strictly Maryland ingredients.

Maybe I should put it on my crabs... Does it really help with them?

;) couldn't resist

Kmcogar, I'd love to see the recipe you use for the Old Bay Beer.

I actually have a couple different ones. One I made when I first started out with a partial mash recipe. It's more of a winter spiced brew. My brother in law and I loved it! But most people were not fans. Then I move to all grain and made a lighter summer one. I was not really a fan...but everyone else loved it! (weird) I served it at my wedding rehearsal. It was a big hit. So there's light and dark. Extract or all grain. Summer or winter. I actually am trying another variation of my summer one with some different ingredients. I just brewed it Saturday. I did it much differently then the other ones. We will see how it turns out
