Hey All,

I was going to try a starter for my next brew and came across some old DME that I had never got around to using. Probably from when I brewed many years ago. It has never been opened.

Is there any expiration date on DME?

I usually use LME for brews and would never risk a batch with old ingredients but I figured it should be ok for a starter.

Thanks

Yeah, I've had it harden up but you just have to break it apart and soak it in a little warm water before you start to boil it. I don't think it can every really go bad if its sealed up fairly tight. Although, I'm probably with you and wouldn't put it in a beer, but for a starter all the yeast want is sugar, doesn't matter how it tastes to you!

Yeah, the sugar content is so high in DME I doubt any micro organisms will grow in it...
