Seeing as how the last 5 topics were from Canada (and Ottawa in particular) I figured I just had to step out from my lurking ways.

New to brewing! My first batch is in bottles and tomorrow is my second brew day. Great information here.

and congrats to those stupid senators. <grumble>

A porter. It was a kit from the LHBS.

and for tomorrow...Cheesefood's Boom-Boom Vanilla Ale. :rockin:

North Buffalo, near Hertel. And yeah I go to Niagara Traditions. Except I missed them today and their closed tomorrow. Alas, maybe Monday. Are there any other homebrew shops in the area?

Poo.

Let's Do Wine is on Union (I believe) in Cheektowaga. I think there is another one in Orchard Park as well. Just do I search on that internet thingy and you should find it. Never been to either, but you asked. Oh, and welcome by the way!

Let's Do Wine is a little weird to me. They just don't have a lot of beer stuff, and the owner is stare-over-your-shoulder-all-time creepy.

Niagara Traditions is great. I'm right downtown B-lo and its not that bad of a drive. Awesome to see more Buffalonians on here, we all need to hook up and sample our brews.

There should be a tasting at N.T. here pretty soon. You should make sure you get signed up on their e-mail list if you haven't already. Those are always a good time.

I got hooked on this hobby last june buying my first kits at Let's do wine in Hamburg. The lady that runs that shop is about as nice as they come. So i go to the other store up on union and the dude is so messed up, i won't go back to that shop. Isn't retail supposed to be customer service? He reminded me of that fat porno star, i think his name was harry reams?

NT on Sheridan is always busy and have what you want. I was hoping to get into the tasting last October but alas there was this wicked storm the same day....you may have heard about this storm, if you have a tree. when will they reschedule??

Go Bills

Hah!

That was one messed up week. Seriously...I had to stay with the in-laws.

I heard a thing or two about that storm. Since I didn't have power for 5 days and no cable or internet for almost a month. Ahhh, those were the days... And turfguy, they've had a number of tastings since that storm. Like I said, there should be another one coming up soon. It used to be every second Friday of the month, but I believe they got thrown off by National Homebrew Day. Just keep your fingers crossed, and I'm sure there will be one right around the corner.

I went there today and picked up some supplies. The folks there are super nice and answered all of my noobie questions very graciously. I'm really glad we have a shop like that in the area.

called yesterday and no tasting till september. anyone in a local brew club in buffalo?

No sir, but there are 2 brewing clubs in the area. The Sultans of Swig and the Niagara Association of Homebrewers. I have talked to a few of the Niagara guys (they seem to be around NT more frequently I guess) I think Paul could tell you how to join either club if you were interested.

The guys I have talked to seem pretty cool. I would think about it, but I'm moving in a couple of weeks. I sure will miss the people over at the store though.

New to brewing and even newer to this site but I was surprised to see a Buffalo thread. My first batch is in the primary soon to be transfered prolly tomorrow. For our first batch we picked a Heiny clone! We didn't really think about the temp changes when we bought it but all seems to be working out perfectly. I haven't been up to Niagara Traditions but will have to soon (the little HB shop in Lockport is way too small). I was wondering if anyone knows if they carry any grain grinders? And also any tips on where I might be able to find some cheap or free corny kegs? Thanks.

I've been to that one in Lockport, Make Your Own, is it? It's definitely fun there. Try Niagara Traditions whenever you have some free time. I feel like a kid in a candy shop there.

WHAAATTT you can't move now dude?? this is the best part of the year in the area. You are gonna miss all the festivals!! Why would you move? this area has a lot going for it. I challenge you to find nicer people, no threat of disaster (well snow of course) and a better cost of living? no traffic? you wont find better than here.

Agreed. Where are you going to, anyways?

Sorry to disappoint the fellow Queen City folk, but I just got settled down here in Durham, North Crack-A-Lacky. The SWMBO and I decided to relocate to the same plce instead of being 5 hours apart. She got a great job offer that she couldn't refuse and I actually got job I think I will like much better than the one I had up North. The bonus is that I have 2 good buddies in Charlotte that I got into brewing so I'm planning on going down there once SWMBO goes on 3rd shift. It was just time for a change, but you guys have fun in Buffalo. I know I will miss it, but I'm looking forward to new experiences. Now if only I could find a LHBS... Cheers!

Hey all-

Just making my first post. Live in N-Buffalo off Hertel as well. I'm just doing kit brewing from Niagara Traditions, but I'm working my way into AG.

I have a couple batches conditioning as we speak. I'll post updates when they're ready.

Can't wait to get more involved!

Sweet man! What kit? I'm thinking about brewing on Tuesday...even though I've got two batches going already. I've been bitten by the bug.

And I'm right around the corner from you. Hit me up sometime.

Brian

I started with the Pilsner kit from NT. It's been conditioning in the bottles for almost 3 weeks. I tried one cold a week in and it wasn't very good, tried one two weeks in, a bit better, but still not what I expected (bitter to say the least) and I'm going to try one over the holiday hoping that leaving it in the bottle longer will do the trick.

I also have an IPA kit I purchased. I think it was "Paul's IPA" recipe kit. It's kegged and it tasted pretty good when I racked it to the keg, so I'm hopeful on that one. :) Still has a couple weeks to go yet.

And finally, I'm racking a Honey Ale to the secondary tonight (hopefully). I payed closer attention to my sanitation this time around, and I used a wort chiller to get my temp down quicker (it was taking ~2.5 hours to get from boiling to 75degrees - I'm thinking this may have messed up my first two batches) before I pitched.

I'll let you know how it goes...

Chris

Nice.

My first batch was the Pottsville Porter from NT. Tasted funny as well. Maybe the hot alcohol taste but I can't put my finger on it at all. I'm pretty sure I let it ferment at too high a temperature. I still have a case in my basement hoping that it will get better in time.

I've done partial grain kits boston lager, and octoberfest lager from Niagara Traditions. They were two of the best I ever made. As we are in Buffalo, I have found using the cold basement to my advantage. In winter, my bottles conditioned at under 50 degrees. In the summer my basement stays even at 65-67 degrees all the time. I brewed ales and wheats last summer, and lagers this winter. If you have lagers conditioning at 65 for only 3 weeks, i'd say they will need to sit colder and longer. after the first week.

on another note i am sad to lose another buffalonian to the hot, busy, festival free south. But all said BEST OF LUCK. You should think of changing your call name, maybe to waterskiordie...:p

I'll always be a skier. The snow will probably be what I miss most from the North. Mail me some in a couple months if you don't mind. I'm sure you'll all have plenty.

its great to see some people from buffalo on here. Im new to the site an feel right at home. I shop at niagara traditions also.

No just started. Idid one island mist wine kit and currently i have 3 gal of strawberry wine in my primary. i have another island mist kit on stand by and want to branch out to do cider

Do any of you guys know what the level of Magnesium and Bicarbonate levels are in the city water?

I recently received the water report in the mail but it didn't list either. I also called the Dept of Water lab and they told me they don't even test for them (but she did give me the Chloride which is 16ppm).

But the reading I've been doing says that Mg and HCO3 are important.

Thanks!

does anyboy have any good sources for cheap bottles wine or beer in the area normally i shop at n.t. but wondering if there is anywhere cheaper

I just left 2 cases of empties in my basement when I left. I should have put them up on here. I got lucky and new a guy that was a member of a sportsmens club that served beer. I bought 2 cases of long necks for like $10. I love those bottles. The other option is to buy a couple of cases of genny light and have a party!

No idea. But if you do find out I'd like to know as well.

Ok, thanks for the reply. If I ever come up with it, I'll post it here.

Probably no big deal, but it would be nice to have those numbers for BeerSmith or maybe I'm just too anal. :)
