Greetings from Cary, NC. I made immersion cooler from DIY article here today. A friend suggested using plate chiller to reduce heat transfer time from an hour to 5 minutes. Would another coil in cooler of ice water do the trick?

If you are talking about doing two coils, one in a bucket of ice and one in your wort then yes it will help with cooling times vs running just tap water through the one coil. After that your limiting factor will be surface area for heat transfer and how well your coils conduct heat.

My 50' single coil chiller with tap water worked great for 4 gallon wort. It went from boil to 80 deg F in about the time it takes me to shower. I hate wasting water and would like to go closed loop yet do not feel too bad.
