Has anyone used one of the commercial coffee grinders for crushing their grain? i might have a line on one for pretty cheap, and was thinking it might be a good alternative to buying/customizing a standard grain crusher...

Coffee grinders like the Bunn ones don't crush the beans, but cut them using the sharp edges of the burrs. It's a different process to grain crushing, so it's not likely to work well.

A coffee grinder will shred the grain husks. The ultimate goal in crushing grain is to break up the inside of the kernel and leave the husk in tact as much as possible. The husks provide bulk and allow drainage through the grain bed. I would save up and get a good grain mill instead, it will pay for itself in bulk grain purchases and not having stuck sparges.
