I made a pale ale extract brew about 8 weeks back using an extract kit I also added an extra 500 grams of light dme.

Ny temps were always around 20c its been in the bottle for about 5 weeks now and it tastes good when it first hits the mouth but leaves a strong aftertaste that resembles grapefruit mixed with pen ink that makes it hard to drink.

Anyone know what could of caused this or if it should age out?

thanks.

Sounds kind of like fusel alcohol to me...
If your room temp was 20c the fermentation could be several degrees hotter and that may be what caused the flavors you're experiencing.

Aging out is possible for bigger beers, but you might lose the hop character of your pale ale before the fusels break down

IMO, it was the addition of the DME that threw the recipe out of balance.

Grapefruit could be from the hops - never tasted pen ink....

Nothing like diagnosing scents and flavors over the internet...

zmxncbv - I hope you have a club or local judge/pro who can help! Never hurts to keep at least a few bottles to see how it progresses for future reference.
