    Trub in primary

Just finished brewing a BB summer ale last night and have an enormous amount of trub floating in the primary and settled on the bottom. Is this bad? Should I siphon it off to a secondary? The yeast has been pitched and activity has started.

How big should my mash tun be?

I was wondering how big a mash tun I would need for ten gallon batches. I want to brew all types of beer.

    Who's grinding?

Considering all the stuff I have read regarding poor efficiency and LHBS's not properly milling grains to the right consistency, I'm wondering what cheap grain mill members are using to mill their own grains. You can buy many hand grind mills for under 50 bucks on eBay. These can be...

    Keggle capacity.

If a keggle holds 16 gallons, is it possible to do 15 gallon all grain batches? I want to start building a single tier system like the Brutus 10 and hear this system is only good for ten gallon batches. I am a noob and have not tried AG yet.

    Ferment temp

I have a Brewer's Best Summer Ale kit that says to ferment at temps between 64-72 degrees. If my ferment room is at 75 degrees during this heat wave, is it ok to ferment in? I'm reading on this forum that people have fermented at temps as high as 80 degrees.

So how long should it really take?

I have consumed my first batch of IPA (maestro series). It was fantastic. It was better when it went past the times specified in the directions for aging in the bottle. After reading all the posts about how long members leave beer in the primary and secondary I was shocked. The directions...

    Oxyclean contamination?

Racked my American light to the bottling bucket with the priming sugar solution. I had a strainer sitting on top of a three gallon bucket that I was using to catch drips from washing bottle washers in oxy earlier that day. I was going to flip the bucket upside down and use it as a platform for...

Can we get another sticky for noobs?

Ok, I am a noob to this forum and home brewing and I'm having a hard time with understanding all the acronyms and terms. There are many home brewing terms that are not in papazian's glossary. Some examples... Why do wives=swmbo? What does that stand for? I didn't know what cold crashing meant...

    Strain wort?

So I bought the funnel with the strainer in the bottom and used it to filter wort into my primary. I was amazed at the amount of stuff that clogged it. Do hop pelleys really expand that much? Both kits i used had bittering and finishing hops. Someone told me to not strain my wort. Should I...

    Beer already at FG?

My kit is Brewer's Best American Light. I used bottled spring water and followed the instructions exactly and it has been in the primary for seven days. OG was 1.041 exactly what the kit said it should be. The instructions suggest a final gravity of 1.010. I just finished racking it to a...

    primary temp question

So I brewed up a batch of Brewer's Best American Light seven days ago. I re-hydrated the yeast before pitching and the fermentation took off with a vengeance. My primary has been in a dark corner of my basement and the temp today is 72f on the carboy thermometer. Is this too high a temp...

Would I be breaking any laws if....

If I pay deposit to my local beer store for empty kegs, do I lawfully own them? I want to make a brew kettle, mash tun and HLT. I remember how you could potentially get in trouble for having milk crates that said they were owned by the dairy farm. I have a hard time believing half...

    Hello Everybody!

Just joined today! I have used HBT as a resource of info for the last two weeks. During this time I made my first two batches of extract brew. The first is an IPA that I have had aging in the bottle for 4 days. I brewed Brewer's Best American Light last night. I have jumped into this...
