    Bazooka Screen Placement idea?

So I bought a nice new 15 gallon kettle and proceeded to drill away at it for my ball valve and bazooka screen. Well I didn't account for the hop trub that would settle at the bottom of the kettle and consequently I drilled my hole to close to the bottom and I'm getting stuck flow. My first...

What's worse; open solder connection or silicone?

I have made a simple electric sparge tank using two of those 1000w "allied" bucket heaters and I'm super happy with them. However I do notice on the heating elements there is a small solder where they connect the heat element to the thermometer element. I'm sure it's fine, but I hear people say...

Why are so many people letting beer sit so long??

I've always had the question of why so many homebrewers let their beer sit in primary or secondary for soooo long. Aside from sours, fruit beers and high gravity beers, isn't anything over 1 week in primary and 1 week in secondary bad for the beer? Most commercial brewers thrive on freshness...

Never seen an infection like this!?! what is this?

Brewed a simple chocolate hef beer and after transferring into secondary this showed up! Never seen an infection with such a star shaped linear fashion. Can anyone positively identify this? I'd be happy to leave it to do it's thing and end up with a Berliner Weiss of sorts, but if it's bad...

    Hydroponic Hops First Year Growth!

Hey everyone so there has been many threads about hydroponic hops with various small scale hobby setups, but none of them proving how well it can work. I have a greenhouse with over 750 plants all producing beautifully the first season! All hydroponic, climate controlled, pesticide free! So...

    Colorado Commercial Hydroponic Hops

Hey guys so this forum has been a homebrew tool of mine for quite some time, with all of your help I went from undrinkable beer to gold medals! Thanks for that! I've started the worlds first commercial hydroponics hops operation, Hydro Hop Farms LLC. Our hops are all handpicked, bine...

    Hard Cider won't start fermenting!!

Ok I'm at a loss on this one, so maybe some cider experts can help me out..... I picked fresh apples from my apple tree in the back yard and juiced them to get about 6 gallons worth of juice. I tossed in 5 crushed campden tablets to the 6 gallons of juice and let it sit around with a foam...

How to class a Vanilla IPA for judging?

Well the title says it all.....I brewed an Imperial Vanilla IPA, but I'm not sure whether it is an Imperial IPA or if the vanilla will change the category into a spice/fruit beer or something. Need to get this bad boy entered by the 14th so hopefully my fellow brewers can help me out. Cheers.

    less wort mean more abv?

I just brewed a simple Pale Ale and after transferring into the secondary I realize I've lost a lot of beer! I did a 5 gallon batch and I've ended up with only about 3.5 or 4 gallons. Now I hear people say this beer will be stronger...however does this just describe flavor or abv? Can abv...

Adding ice to cool the wort down?

This may seem like a "dumb" question, however.......Why not just add ice to your wort to bring down to yeast temps.? I understand that by adding new water to the wort you will dilute it and that will have slight variance on your flavor, very minimal I'm assuming (i brew 7 gallon batches, so...

Copper Verdigris or Copper Chloride from wort chiller

There seems to be little info on this subject, so I figured I'd ask. Last night I was brewing my Fall seasonal, Chocolate Pumpkin Porter, and I realized that my copper immersion wort chiller had a blue or green color to it. Just assuming it was harmless, and having a few homebrews at this...

    Hydrometer reading(FG)=1.010 Brix=7.1%???

I've got a batch of IPA that has been in the primary for 2 weeks and the current hydrometer reading is 1.010 yet using a refractometer the brix % is 7.1. I've looked up a few different equivalency charts for brix->specific gravity and my readings do not match up??? I've also heard that brix...

    Cloudy IPA? 7 day fermentation?

Hey guys so I've got a batch of PSA IPA it's only been in the primary for 7 days and the airlock bubbles once every five minutes or so....at this rate I'm thinking it will be done in a few days, however that would only be a week and a half of fermentation and I hear people talking about 3-4 week...

    Fermenter Explosion=Cloudy Beer???

First time brewer here....I started my first batch of PSA IPA (brewers best kit) and decided I should dry hop it in the fermenter. Turns out the dry hops clogged my blow off tube and resulted in a top explosion from my carboy. Cleaned everything up and put the airlock back on and the beer seems...
