    Too Late to Start?

If you want hops this year, yah probably. If you want even more hops next year, start them up now. Of course, you were not going to get hops this year anyway. Not selling to a business but Great Lakes Hops are pretty dang near a guarantee to grow. They sell plants, not rhizomes.

    the perfect beer pumpkin

I am very curious what people do say but I kinda made a decision in the mean time. I got a seedling from the local farmers online sales for a Delicata squash (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delicata_squash) and I'm going to find a sugar pumpkin and let the bees mix them up. I have heard that...

    the perfect beer pumpkin

I know this seems like this question is completely out of season, but its quite the opposite. I am trying (in a very nerdy attempt) to breed a perfect beer pumpkin. I am having a very hard time to find what varieties of pumpkin are best for brewing. So far my pumpkins are a Nantucket Pie...

Micro picking machine for hobby growers

Or you could bend the ends to the other half and make your triangle that way. I also wonder how much damage the wire ends would do if you keep the rotations to a lower speed. Good luck.

Micro picking machine for hobby growers

If you follow the links in this post to one that GVH Dan posted (#9), the last poster on that thread was nagmay and they suggested a link to this rake... http://www.forestry-suppliers.com/product_pages/Products.asp?mi=48840&itemnum=33835&title=The%20Groundskeeper%20II%20Full-Size%20Rake For...

    scaling a recipe

Because I'm pretty sure my problems were with too much water, just how much of a boil are you supposed to have. A rolling boil? A simmering boil? Heck, taking the lid off vs leaving it on affects how much gets evaporated off. I have put numbers in to Brewer's Friend and 365 and am choosing...

    scaling a recipe

Thanks for the tips. The Brew365 calculator is very useful. I do believe my problems are around the volume of water added. I definitely had too much water diluting my grains too far. Two questions related to that... Are you supposed to tip your lauter tun? I have a DIY orange 10 gallon...

    scaling a recipe

My current setup leaves me with smaller batches if I want to all grain brew. Today I tried to fiddle around with Brewers Friend and ended up with pretty low efficiency. I'm pretty sure it revolves around the amount of water used in my mash and sparge. Which leads to my question... how do I...

    whats in your pantry?

I am new to all grain. I realize that I can buy ingredients per batch, but am curious about buying in bulk. I also realize that my brewing styles will affect what I buy in bulk but am curious how people handle buying in bulk. What do you buy in bulk and what do you buy per batch? I do have a...

    dry hopping in a keg

How can I sterilize the bag or hops? I read that the hops do not need sterilizing but I am assuming the bag will.

    dry hopping in a keg

Can I dry hop in a keg of finished beer? I made something like a pale ale that seems to need a little something extra. Thanks,

    Making wort like coffee

But you are doing it at 170 degrees. Why not do it at 170 degrees AND recirculate it. Recirculate it for 15 minutes and then turn the pump off. This is why I ask... 800.00 Dollars is BS for a pump and an industrial coffee basket. https://www.minibrew.io/ FYI... I'm a extract brewer. I'll...

    Making wort like coffee

Someone please tell me why this is a bad idea... Would it be possible to keep the grains in a basket and run water/wort through it until you have removed all the sugars? Similar to brewing coffee or a percolated coffee. It seems it would eliminate the need for sparging and possibly save...

Help Me To Pick Out Rhizomes For Next Year

What do you brew? I'll just throw out Great Lakes Hops out there. They don't sell rhizomes, they sell actual growing plants.

How much money did you loose this year?

But you know what, I don't really care. They look awesome in my back patio, and people walking by have commented on them. Hops make beautiful ivy. I can't agree more. My centennials grow in front of my covered porch and make the most incredible privacy cover. I honestly thought that hops...

How much money did you loose this year?

This post is intended to be humorous BTW... I personally don't grow hops to save money, I'm a DIY type and like growing things. This past weekend has been my harvest of my three varieties of hops. I did some math to see how much money I saved and it got me thinking... The going rate for hops...

    Pumpkin Rye

I'm brewing a batch right now. I did it last year and the spicy of the rye complimented the pumpkin so well. I have never seen a recipe for pumpkin and rye so I am mostly posting this as a shout out for people to try. I am using 3.3 lbs LME Rye and about 4 lbs of last years pumpkin (frozen...

Do aphids affect the taste of beer

Of course I answered my own question. After a night of drying all the aphids came to the top of the pile by the thousands. Quite very gross. They are in the sun over a fan drying and I can't find then any more. It appears that they will leave the hops as they dry. A very gross sight, however.

Do aphids affect the taste of beer

My Centennials are infested with aphids this year. I did not notice it until harvest. I just dragged my hand through some drying hops (to mix them up for even drying) and my hand got coated in aphids. I just did some reading on the internet and I am surprised that my plants did not show ANY...

A variety that is not like what I currently have

I'm going to order through Great Lakes Hops and the Chinook was the one I noticed before I posted. Switchback Extra Pale Ale is a Centennial, Chinook and Cascade pale ale and quite good. I'm not real scientific with my brewing yet so I think Chinook is going to win. Thanks for the suggestions...
