Any way to save low carbonation? Carb tabs?

So I have been having problems of over-carbonating my beers with using the same amount of table sugar for all styles. So recently I started using this website: http://hbd.org/cgi-bin/recipator/recipator/carbonation.html In the past I used the "temperature at bottling" as my temp, but later I...

Carbonation is Low... What to do?

This might be a classic RDWHHB situation I bottled a Helles Munich 2 weeks ago. Fermentation was at 52 degrees Lagered at 32 degrees for 6 weeks This being my first lager, I was unsure what to use for temperature for priming sugar. The beer temperature was about 35 degrees after it...

White Labs WLP860 Munich Helles- how low can it go?

Apparently the groundhog was lying, or forgot about the upper Midwest this year in his forecast, because we have gotten a late start to our spring. I am hoping to brew a lager here in the next week or so. My fermentation chamber (fridge with a temp control) is my in garage, so naturally I...

Trouble maintaining mash temp with Rubbermaid 10 gal

I am hoping someone can provide some insight here. Maybe some others use this same set up and might be able to offer advise. I built my own mash tun following these instructions: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/cheap-easy-10-gallon-rubbermaid-mlt-conversion-23008/ I've been using it for...

Bottling from a keg, will this work?

I would like to really work on clearing my beer more, so I am considering keg conditioning and then bottling from that. Funds are tight and I can't really find an affordable beer gun, the one at my LHBS is $75. Would it work to use a normal bottle filler like this hooked up to my keg...

5 Star Cleaner, Why does water level go down?

I've always wondered this, just for curiosity... I put the proper amount of Five Star cleaner powder in my carboy, then fill with hot water, stopping to shake to stir it up somewhat. Once I get it all the way full, to the brim, I walk away. I come back several minutes later and the water...

Temperature Control Device: What Are Some Good Options?

I am looking to get a temp control device such as a Ranco or Johnson Controls device. For Example: http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/johnson-controls-a419-digital-temp-controller.html I need something I can plug my refrigerator into, versus something that I need to hardwire into the...

Why is my wort dark? (lager)

This is my second attempt at brewing my recipe. It calls for 8lbs German pils .5 lbs of Munich .5 lbs of Vienna .5 lbs of carafoam 90 min boil Estimated color is 4.3 I brewed this first as a test batch, and I completely missed my OG (1.033 missed from 1.053, i do know what the...

When to stop fly sparging, gravity reading hot wort or cool wort?

Ive read that most people stop sparging at 1.010. But what I don't know is that is that 1.010 with hot wort, or adjusted for temperature? Hot wort will read a lower gravity than cooled wort, so clarification on this is obviously key Thanks

    Bottling a Lager- Primer? Yeast?

I am getting ready to brew my first lager. I plan to ferment in a primary for 3 weeks at 45-50 deg, lager for 6 weeks at 35-40 deg, and then straight to bottles. Do I need to do a secondary? I don't have a secondary- I could rack to my bottling bucket, clean and sanitize my carboy and...

    Lager starters, how much?

Making my first lager. How big should a starter be for a 5 gal batch? A lot of people seem to make starters at 1L, but calculations would say I need approx 3.2 liters so basically almost a gallon. Need to know so I can either buy a flask or 1gal carboy. I assume I would decant the wort off if I...

What happens if you pitch a lager without a starter?

I am planning my first lager, and I'm curious what happens if I don't have. Starter. I am planning on brewing today, and have no starter ready. Thanks!

Modern Mini Fridge Fermentation Chamber Conversion, Bending Coils

Nevermind... Was very close to being done with the entire break down, but the motor shifted and crimped the coil running out from the pump... fluid sprayed out... it's toast. Go figure, I'm careful the entire time and then a fluke thing like that happens. At least it was cheap Working on...

Mashing in lauter tun question? New to AG

New to all grain and trying to get all of my equipment ready for my first batch. I have a ten gal rubbermaid cooler that i will be converting into a mashing/lauter tun. My question is, is this fairly standard practice? To mash in the lauter tun? Reading on the process, I've got the impression...

Ball valve for lauter tun - brass ok?

I am trying to swap out the spigot on my 10 gal cooler to convert it into a pretty nice lautering tun. My home brew store charges somewhere around 30 bucks for a ball valve with a barb. Being cheap, and trying to lesson the costs to appease SWMBO I figured this looks easy enough to find ay my...

Adding belgian sugar after fermentation has started

Tried my first partial mash and ended up not getting much sugars from it, so I am much lower for my OG than I expected. I have some Belgian sugar that I could boil cool and add to the carboy, but would this alter the flavor? Thanks

Trappist Yeast: krausen hasn't dropped in 2 weeks???

I'm making a homemade Belgian Tripel. The OG was measured at 1.080. It's a test batch, about 2.5 gal, but I used the entire yeast package (so, in essence I double pitched). The krausen was pretty dense and it started fermenting like crazy. It has settled down quite a bit, but the krausen...
