    NEW StrangeBrew Elsinore Thread

Quick question. Havn't started yet but want to add the PH module. Does anyone know if youi can use any PH meter with any probe with a BNC connector. Id like to use it to use a high temp probe to read the mash PH from start to finish. Thanks Chris

    NEW StrangeBrew Elsinore Thread

Doug The only way i get any PWM on the manual mode is with a duty cycle time of 1 second. All set duty cycle %'s work fine. If i make the cycle time more than 1 second, no matter the duty cycle % i will either get full on or full off no pulsing. Thanks

    NEW StrangeBrew Elsinore Thread

Doug I incorrectly shut down Elsinore without using CTRL C and now when i log back in i have everything set as before but i can't get any of my ssr's to fire. The display shows the duty cycle or PID parameters i set just no ssr function. Should i re pull the code again or is there a way...

    NEW StrangeBrew Elsinore Thread

Doug Got a few questions. Is Elsinore able to run on the new RPi A+ or B+? Was wanting a separate controller for my fermenters. How do i update new versions without reflashing my SD card if there is a way? I dont have a huge repertoire when it comes to the programming. Hows the PH...

    NEW StrangeBrew Elsinore Thread

Got the GPIO to register and fire the SSR in manual mode. Randomly works in the Auto mode although no hooked up to HLT yet just a rough build. What has anyone found to be reliable P,I, and D settings for consistent temperature maintenance? Thanks Chris

    NEW StrangeBrew Elsinore Thread

Doug Awesome. I was able to get the UI to boot up and get it to recognize my temp probes. When i go to assign a name it sometimes doesn't accept it and wont recognize the SSR when i assign it. Do i have to type GPIO23 or GPIO 23 on the second line of the temp desplay. Thanks again...

pH at mash and room temp?

Bru'n water, as do the vast majority of people, calculates referred to room temperature. This is an issue I'm having also. All the given ph reading that we are shooting for as brewers (Mash, Boil, Sparge, ect) are all at room temp. So if i have a 21 degree cooled mash sample at a ph of 5.4...

CTZ vs Apollo: The final bittering hop battle

There both great hops. Its all up to you. I like Apollo much better just because i like an IPA with more of a smooth flavor so i use low Cohumulone hops like Apollo, Magnum, and Warrior for bittering. Apollo is what i bitter almost everything with. Ive used CTZ for bittering and it works...

Effects of pitching to much yeast?

Your fine most likely. Here's a good pitch rate calculator. http://www.brewersfriend.com/yeast-pitch-rate-and-starter-calculator/ Its nice because you can set the %of yeast cells per million based on preference. Here a good write up on the effects of Under/Over Pitching...

Anyone get air on the out flow side of their plate chiller?

Was chilling a 10 gallon batch of Scotch Ale today and i noticed that that there was a trail of bubbles coming through on the out side of the plate chiller. Everything was tight on my fittings. Question is if i had an air pocket in the chiller could i have gotten hot side aeration...

    Polyclar?

10 Grams max in a 5 gallon batch is the most you should add. Any more will strip color and hop flavor and aroma. This is all from George Fix in Principals of Brewing Technology. From my own experience i use a level 1/2 tea spoon with about 4 oz boiled cooled water. Make sure the Beer is cold...

Do slow boils impact starch conversion?

How vigorous is the boil with the 1500w element? There wont be any issues with starch conversion as thats done in the mash. You could run into hop utilization issues or problems with DMS if your using Pilsen Malt. Chris

    Clearing the brew

If you want it to clear try polyclar. I use half tea soon on my dry hopped IPAs and it pulls everything down and clears nicely in two days in secondary with out striping any flavor our aroma

    Winter Warmer Question

Sorry almost forgot the most important part. Be sure the molasses is unsulphured type. That's where I think I got the off favor from my previous batch. Anything from the Merc should be fine. Happy brewing. Chris
