    Belgian Wit Questions

I have been brewing off and on for several years and have done extract, extract with steeping grains, and all grain batches. I want to brew a somewhat Belgian Wit using wheat DME and Hallertau hops. I think I may try the hops tea/no boil DME method just out of curiosity and in the interest of...

Question about pin lock Corny kegs

I have a lead on some pin lock kegs for $30 each. Can I leave them as pin lock, and change out the lid so that it has a pressure relief valve just by changing the lid? I guess what I am asking is will a ball lock lid fit a pin lock keg???

    MoreBeer Sweet Stout kit

About half way in to an hour boil using the MoreBeer Sweet Stout kit. Sure does smell good! I went outside a minute ago to check it and there were several honey bees flying around. Guess they want a sample too! Edit: O.G. was 1.056. Estimated O.G. was 1.045-1.049. Pitched re-hydrated...

    Question about ferment temperature

I have a spot in my computer room that has ceramic tile on the floor. The temperature of the tile is about 61 degrees measured with a stem thermometer sitting on the tile. The temperature of the air in this area is currently about 68-69 degrees using the same thermometer. If I brew a batch...

Most important factor to produce good beer?

Other than sanitation, what do you feel like is the most important factor in producing good quality home brew? How about regulating fermentation temperature? Or having a lot of patience? Just curious what every one thought may be the biggest factor other than sanitation. Thanks. I...

    Honey Orange Cream Ale

Just got through brewing up a Honey Orange Cream Ale. Recipe was 7 lbs. Briess Light LME, 1 lb. honey malt, 1 lb. carapils. Added .75 oz Cascade hops at start of boil, and with 10 minutes left added 1 oz. sweet orange peel, 1 tsp. irish moss, and 1/4 oz. cascade pellets. Cooled to 78 degrees...

    2nd all grain batch today

I tried my second all grain batch today. I was doing a Maris Otter/East Kent Goldings SMaSH. I don't really care for real hoppy beers, so I used 1/2 oz. for 60 minutes, one oz. for 10 minutes, and 1/2 oz. at flame out. 8.5 lbs. of grain. I had a little more boil off than I anticipated, and...

Am I risking bottling too soon?

I just did my third batch since starting back brewing after a 15 year hiatus. It was a porter brewed with extract and steeping grains. I was trying to make a clone of Black Butte porter using the ingredients found on Deschutes web site and guessing at the amount. This coming Monday will be...

    Cost to upgrade Beersmith

I bought the Beersmith 2 program and have version 2.040 installed. It tells me that there is a version 2.057 available. Does anyone know if there is a charge for this update since it is still Beersmith 2? I sent a message to Beersmith but haven't heard back and was just curious...

    Deschutes Black Butte Porter clone

I just brewed my third batch since starting back brewing after a long hiatus. I was trying to do a clone of Deschutes Black Butte porter, and went to their web site and found ingredients, just not quantities. So, I struck out on my own and got after it. Did a full 6 gallon boil with extract...

Please critique my Black Butte clone recipe

Hey all. Semi new brewer wanting to clone Black Butte porter. I went to the Deschutes website and found the ingredients, just not the amounts of the ingredients. I thought I would throw this out for you more experienced brewers to critique and see what suggestions you may have. Here are...

My first AG batch-Recipe and numbers hit

Well, I took the plunge and did my first all grain batch today. I used a 5 gallon igloo style cooler for a mash tun, but instead of a manifold, I used a 5 gallon paint strainer bag. It worked out pretty good. Next time, I probably will go ahead and make a manifold for the cooler though. My...

    Got a good "Freebie" today!

I have a buddy who owns a propane distributorship, and I went to visit him this morning to purchase a spare bottle and have it filled. We were talking guns like we usually do, and I told him while I was there, I needed to purchase another bottle and have it filled, so I would have a spare for...

    First brew in 12 years!

Working on my first brew in 12 years. Went with a simple DME and steeping grain recipe to get started, then after a few batches want to get into all grain. I am doing a partial boil with 5 lbs. wheat DME and 1 lb. crystal 15 steeped up to 160, then removed, and a single addition of...

    Priming Sugar Question

Hey all. I just ordered a basic kit and some ingredients from MoreBeer to do this recipe https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f70/simple-hefeweizen-186432/ . I substituted SafBrew 33 for the yeast since MoreBeer didn't have Danstar Munich. I also forgot to order priming sugar. Guess it was the 4...

    Deschutes Black Butte Porter

Don't flame me guys! I'm just an old Miller Lite drinker who used to be a homebrewer, who is soon to be another homebrewer! Instead of drinking my usual Miller Lite, I have been experimenting with different beers that I have never had, so I can come up with something I would like to brew. I...

    2.5 gal all extract recipe

I used to brew several years ago, and want to start again. I only did extract brewing in the past, but am now wanting to try my hand at all grain brewing. I think I want to start out small with a 2.5 gal. batch and start with an extract brew just to re-familiarize myself with all the steps...

    Mash in a bag?

I used to brew extract brews several years ago, then got out of homebrewing. I am thinking about it again, and have been reading about the stovetop method of all grain brewing. Would it be possible to use a 5 gal. cooler as a mash tun, and use a bag to contain all of the grains, then pull...

    Another noobie from Texas

Hey all. I just stumbled across this site while doing research on home brewing. I was into home brewing about 15 years ago but drifted away. Only did extract brewing then. I think I am going to get back in to brewing again, and want to try my hand at all grain brewing. Look forward to...
