    Conical HLT/BK/fermenter idea.

I tried attaching a dead-end RIMs tube to the bottom of the conical - starting hearing loud popping sounds after a few minutes so I turned it off. Guessing just the steam going up vs. the weight of the water causing that: https://imgur.com/Pb9XX8c

    Conical-RIMS idea

Very cool, thanks for the pics - I tried using a 1000w bucket heater in 6gallons but it couldn't quite up to boiling, going to up to 5500w. I've also been thinking about ways to measure volume in the conical, wanted to avoid adding a site tube. I've tried ultrasonic sensors (don't work with...

    Conical-RIMS idea

Did this ever end up working for ya? I'm about to try the same thing, big heat stick in a conical fermentor to boil in, ferment, carbonate, and serve from.

    Conical HLT/BK/fermenter idea.

I really like this idea, though the heat distribution thing I think is a pretty likely problem. Also trub and hops falling down and getting trapped in the heat tube and scorching. Though you could get a mesh screen tri clamp gasket which might be enough to prevent that...

3-in-1 "Boil Kettle, Jacketed Chiller, Conical Fermenter" by Brewha

The main thinking was from looking at indirect fire systems (a few links below to the probrewer forums below talk about it) which look to be a forced air heater firing into a firebox below a kettle, heating both the bottom and sides with a pseudo jacket. One post mentions firing into a stainless...

3-in-1 "Boil Kettle, Jacketed Chiller, Conical Fermenter" by Brewha

Has anyone thought of or tried an alternative heating source, through the conical jacket? e.g. hot air into the jacket, hot oil into the jacket, etc

    Indirect fire through jacket

With a quick update, I was able to somewhat get the above to work, but it's difficult to restrict the torpedo down to a small 1/4" opening on the jacket without losing a ton of heat. Can still heat up 12 gallons or so at 2F / minute, without any outside insulation on the fermenter. Maybe I just...

    Indirect fire through jacket

I'm trying to figure out a way to do indirect fire heating on a homebrew scale, mainly as a prototype for a larger system. Not able to find a ton of info on indirect heating on the probrewer side, but it seems like a really nice alternative to steam. Would be a post boil conical all-in-1 system...

    Table for malt ionic contribution?

Hey all - does anyone know of any table/calculator that shows how much any given malt will contribute to various ions in the finished beer? e.g. 2 row mashed in distilled water with a gravity of 1.04 will contribute 100 mg/l of chloride to the finished beer. The closest I came was Handbook of...

Heady Topper- Can you clone it?

Has anyone tried skadoosh (any #) against heady? Knowing that skadoosh is 100% perle malt (per this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STPOtTaSqEA), anyone able to taste the difference in the malt build between 100% perle vs. heady? Is it possible heady is 100% perle? As a side note, the...

    Are the pumps too powerful?

I agree with stirring the mash - this is purely anecdotal from my 30gallon pot RIMs system, but I get the best results when I circulate, turn off and stir, let it sit for 10 mins, circulate again to keep the heat up, etc. I seem to get faster conversion when the mash is sitting without...

Is my magnesium way too high?

I submitted a ward labs reading for my water and finished beer - I'm trying to figure out what if my hardness is an issue and if what I think might be a slight metallic flavor in my beers could be coming from magnesium. Nothing wrong with the beer, but the magnesium level seemed high compared to...

Aslin Mind the Hop Ward Labs Results

Hey all, just wanted to log a ward labs for a finished mind the hop from aslin brewery in Herndon VA (a gaining-popularity juice bomb-focused brewery) for anyone who's interested. pH - 4.6 TDS - 2020 Electrical Conductivity, mmho/cm - 3.37 Cations/Anions, me/L - 54.7/27.4** ppm...

Brewometer kickstarter thoughts - digital bluetooth hydrometer

Does anyone have an issues where the readings spike up crazy high? and over time gravity increases? If i watch my tilt app, I see my 1.014 nearly finished fermenter spike to 1.285ish every few seconds (along with a drop in temperature of about 10 degrees), and increase to 1.017 over the course...

    CraftBeerPi - Raspberry Pi Software

Random question, does anyone know if CraftBrewPi supports PID autotuning? I have a hosehead with Strangebrew Elsinore, and trying to compare against CraftBrewPi. Strangebrew doesn't do autotuning as far as I'm aware.

    hosehead electronic brewery controller

These ones work with the Hosehead sensors: https://www.brewershardware.com/TWTCCAP3.html Though there is a good amount of lag in the reading.

    240v Cord Length Voltage Drop

Thanks all for the responses - 200' was definitely an extreme, hoping to get away with 50' reasonably. Laundry right next to the garage would be ideal, but may not be able to get it. Temporary living situation until buying though, then I can just run my own 240v out to the garage.

    240v Cord Length Voltage Drop

I was hoping to to double check my cord length before moving to a new rental property, where I may or may not have to run a very long 10gauge wire from the laundry room to the garage. I currently use 5500watt elements (only using 1 at a time right now) with a hosehead controller and 8' of 10...

    Length of 10/3 for 30amp

I also wanted to double check my cord length before moving to a new rental property. I currently use 5500watt elements (only using 1 at a time currently) with a hosehead controller and 8' of 10 gauge SJEOOW (https://www.brewhardware.com/product_p/cable10.htm). I may be moving to a house where...

    CSST uses

That looks brilliant - did you ever get around to running a brew day with the plans you mentioned? A makeshift steam jacket / chiller combo would be pretty amazing
