    Brew Kettle SIze

My 16 gal barely has enough room for 10 gallon full volume batches and 22lbs of grain, its like 1/2" from the top. With BIAB i think a good rule of thumb for full volume mashes is double your batch size. 49 quarts will be fine for most 5 gallon batches but may have trouble with a barleywine.

    Growing Barley Take 2: 2015-2016

Update time. I harvested the barely several months ago but only got about 1.5lbs of good looking barley. Chickens and lodging did a bit of damage and then some aphids or other insect also weakened it. I think my barely growing experiment is done because that area of the yard would be better...

Washington New In Box Stainless Chugger Pump (will ship anywhere)

SOLD! I have a new in box, never used stainless chugger pump. $110 shipped. I thought I would need it for 10 gallon batches but we figured out a way that doesn't require it. I didn't do much research on the secondary chugger pump market yet so I am willing to come down in price if...

    Catalyst Fermentor Kickstarter

Meh, they make a lot of terrible comparisons. 5 gallon all grain with secondary and bottling to extract. The brewing process is completely irrelevant to this product and should have been left out because this does not save any space like they wasted the first minute of video claiming. It look...

***SHOWCASE*** LIFETIME Wine Cap Punch down tool

I don't understand why a spoon doesn't work? I've never had issues with blackberry wine and stirring the gunk on top with a spoon...

    Water Conservation When Brewing

I don't think i have ever filled a brewing vessel completely full to soak. Absolutely no need besides to calm your nerves for no real reason.

    Squeezing the Bag

i squeeze as hard as i can and get about .25 qts/lb (or whatever unit of measurement brewtarget uses).

Growing Out of BIAB: Reasons to Consider An MLT

I graduated from 2 vessel brewing to BIAB a couple years ago and haven't looked back. Efficiency went up because i could crush very fine. BIAB and my own grain mill put my efficiency from ~60% up to the high 70's. Where i used to buy 15lbs of grain, I now buy 10 or 11. Unless you are doing...

    Gift Suggestion for Wine Maker

Amateur to expert gifting should really be done with caution. Likely your coworker has a very specific list of things he wants that only him or his wife (if appicable) knows. Something that I bet 99% of homebrewers or winemakers don't have but would use is the set of super accurate hydrometers...

Anyone else clean stainless with green scotchbrite?

Have you been using "green pads" or green scotchbrite? There is a big difference as scothbrite makes industrial scrubbing pads where each color has a certain abrasiveness.

    Wow mind boggling

We should have a sticky that says DO NOT ADD SUGAR TO YOUR CIDER UNTIL YOU CAN MAKE IT WELL WITHOUT SUGAR.

Anyone else clean stainless with green scotchbrite?

This weekend I tried the blue scotch brite labeled as non abraisive and it did not cause the metal residue to form.

Anyone else clean stainless with green scotchbrite?

Its not mold, its metal dust, I'm sure of it. When I clean with the scotch brite it leaves fine "polishing" marks on the stainless. This means that metal could be being abraided. The paper towel wipe down was done immediately after I had rinsed the PBW but wanted to make sure there was no...

Anyone else clean stainless with green scotchbrite?

I don't know if I'm just an idiot or that more people don't know any better but I have been getting a lot of metallic residue in my Sabco fermenter due to using scotch brite to clean it. It only took me about 10 brews to realize the source. This is actual scotch brite and not cheap off brand...

    Film on top of cider

Looks like fermentation to me. You'll know when its an infection... Ciders can take a long time to finish so I wouldn't go by the "if the gravity is stable for 3 day its done" advice. More like stable over a month and dropped mostly clear...

Has anyone tried growing their own barley?

Thanks for the info I'll keep it in mind for next year if this year is a failure. I'll have to hope that the garden seed companies made up the name (or bought it from someone who made up the name) but are still selling a "rebranded" malting barley. I doubt they are trying to scam anyone but...

    Growing Barley Take 2: 2015-2016

I replied to your question about if its a malting barley or not in my first round thread but I find a lot more people calling this a malting barely than not. Its for sure a 2 row barley. The seeds planted this year were germinated from the small amount that grew last year so I should at least...
