Second batch, need help pinpointing the problem

Appreciate all the replies everyone. I will certainly heed the advice given here and continue to read up on these forums for advice in future brews. I am about to bottle my porter tmw so wish me luck with that (I am getting to an almost fanatical stage with cleaning my bottles because thus far...

Second batch, need help pinpointing the problem

johnsnownw: I don't entirely trust my wives opinion on the acidic flavor but it is possible. I a wondering if due to the honey perhaps there is a bit of a mead type flavor? As I have never had mead before I can't know for sure. Trox: Best I can remember there was no or minimal splashing when I...

Second batch, need help pinpointing the problem

It was in my garage so while not exactly a controlled environment it stayed pretty constant around 70 degrees. I have read that the secondary isn't really necessary and there's more risk than gain so I plan on taking that step out in future batches.

Second batch, need help pinpointing the problem

I tried my first batch nearly 3 years ago and decided to give this another go now that I can work in a kitchen larger than most peoples 1/4 baths. I currently have a Ale Pail bucket kits, with a few minor upgrades doing extract batches. It's a Sweet Honey Brown Ale from Old West Supply in...

    Colorado Springs brewers?

So far I'm 50/50 with it. Granted this is only my third batch so there is plenty of room for error. Last week I bottled my brown ale, it tasted off but I am hoping that carbonation and time will make it better. The porter I moved from primary to secondary and it tastes amazing...

    (bottle) Size matters?

Interesting... I have half liter bottles flip tops that I brought back from Germany, that's all I have used. My next trip I plan on bringing back some 3 liter bottles to try some brews in...

    Colorado Springs brewers?

Figured I would chime in here, new to HBT and home brewing. I have two batches going now and we will see how they turn out. Since we are all from the same area any advice on using the tap water from COS utils? My last two batches I only did a partial boil which makes me a bit concerned for the...

    Porter in a secondary

Thanks, it seems as though the old way. to get it into secondary quickly has gone the way of the dodo.

    Porter in a secondary

I've been doing some reading and determined that a secondary fermenter isn't really worth the risk. However, I just brewed a AHS Whiskey Barrel Porter that needs secondary to add the barrel woodchips. So here is my situation, I am leaving town for 3 months and wanted this to be ready for Xmas...

    Evening

Thanks all. I am paranoid now about cleaning and sanitizing. I only did the secondary because I'm. to too sure about how well a job I did on my pitch. We will see.

    Evening

Just wanted to say hello. I'm more of a stalker when it comes to forums, they are so great for finding useful information. I did my third brew last night. My first was quite funky, I don't think my stuff was clean enough. The second is in my second fermenter and will be bottled next week. Last...
