    mr beer

Usually folks use a turkey baster or a wine thief to remove a sample, place it into a test jar (a long, cylindrical holding vessel) and then read the hydrometer from that. Even if the hydrometer fits into the Mr. Beer, you'll be hard pressed to read it accurately from inside the fermenter.

    Remember when...

Fair enough. I work with biological systems. Computers I hit with something heavy repeatedly and hope for the best. So if you say that is what I must have meant, then you are likely correct. :)

    Pronunciation poll

But in British English, the letters are there: aluminium. Us Yanks just came by and said, "What what? Too many "I"s in this word!" And then removed superfluous vowels.

    So much mold!

I will caution to check your temperature more often if you're using a blanket. I tried this trick, and the temperature went UP. I apparently have very warm blankets in my house...

    What's up with your name?

Mine is just a play on words. Quixotic = Exceedingly Idealistic and the suffix -osis = pathology or disease process of. So Quixoticosis = The pathology of excessive idealism. It makes my medical geek and word nerd sides both equally happy.

    Secondary for a Barleywine

    Thanks! I hadn't even considered the spirit-soaked oak... that's a fantastic idea.

    Secondary for a Barleywine

I've got my first barleywine in the fermentor now, and it's ready to go... somewhere else. I don't normally use a secondary, but I was considering it for this brew to bulk age for a couple of months. Will this brew really benefit from bulk aging, or should I just bottle it now and let it age...

    Ideas for a Holiday brew

I'll second the vote for milk stout. I'm brewing myself a milk chocolate stout to have around come Christmas time.

Do u think stone is a top 5 brewery in the U.S.?

This. If you like hoppy beer, they're some of the hoppiest. Personally, I don't like my hops to beat me up in a back alley, so I don't usually drink it. But the boyfriend loves the stuff... I actually really like Stone's smoked porter. Not what folks usually think of when they think "Stone"...

    5 year old beer

I can't think of anything that might grow in the beer that could be dangerous. That being said, while safe to drink, I'm not sure it's something you really want to drink. Taste it and find out!

    Snow!

No snow yet. Hoping we stay nice and not snowy for a while yet. This California girl isn't used to this whole frozen water business.

Jerky Treats are killing your pets

FWIW - Dog Food Advisor is one of those websites, much like PetMD, that I wish would just fall into the ocean and drown. The "information" is based on a lot of pseudoscience "nutrition" about what it's currently trendy to think is "good" and "bad" for dogs. A lot of their "5 Star Foods" have...

    Remember when...

Maybe I'm showing how young I am, but I remember waiting up and going to the computer store at midnight to get Windows 95. We installed in on my computer, which had a whopping 486mhz processing speed.

    FT: Glass Carboys for plastic

I'm looking to trade a 6.5 and a 5G glass carboys for their plastic better bottle counterparts. The 6.5G has been used once, the 5G not at all. Alternatively, if you've got something else awesome you want to offer in exchange, let me know. I can't safely life them by myself, so I won't use...
