Hop stopper, hop spider, some other device, or drop them loose

I love my hop spider. My most recent beer is 10 gallons of hazy IPA with 16 ounces of hops in the boil. It just about maxed out my hop spider, but flavor, aroma and bitterness are exactly what I was going for. No idea if throwing them in loose would have increased utilization at all, but after...

Hi guys, I'm brewing at home for the first time, and I need some insight.

I've never used that yeast and I don't brew meads, but sounds like you are fermenting too cold. Looks like the recommended temp range for that yeast is 59-68. Looks like fermentation is going, just really slow. Get the temp up to the low-mid 60's and I bet you'll be fine.

    New Belgium Has Landed

Abbey is definitely one of my favorites from them. if you can get your hands on La Folie, its definitely one of the best American made oud bruins i've had. If you live in Maine, I would guess you've had much better IPA's than anything New Belgium will ever make.

Haha yeah that one was too easy. Minky, how'd you decide on Gunnison? And, yes Tele stands for telemark. Here's my next one, should be fairly easy.

    Refractometer border is fuzzy

I always had this problem with my refractometer when I was taking a reading once the beer had started fermenting. I could be wrong, but I thought this is one of the downsides to using refractometers, the blurry line is a result of the alcohol that is now present in the beer?

What do you hate about hydrometers?

So, last brewday I broke my hydrometer. This was my first broken hydrometer, and I broke it just before I took my OG. Luckily I bought 2 when I first started brewing, so no problem, I just busted out the new one and took my reading. All was good until I plugged my numbers into Beersmith. My...

    One year later...

If you think of it as the hobby that it is for most of us, it definitely saves money. For example, I am a woodworker, and I spend a massive amount on wood and tools. If I were to quit, I would save money. If I were to quit brewing, however, I would still buy beer. I figure I may as well make my...

    Smoked beer recipe building

I just finished up a Rauchbier with 100% Weyermann Rauch malt. Its super smokey for sure. Not as much so as this: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/263/727/ which is what I was going for. I really like it. Others who have tried it have really hated it. I'd say If you want something with a...

    MoreBeer Grain Crush Issues

So i just finished brewing a dubbel, going for a 1.065 og. I used morebeers "great western domestic" 2-row and some caravienne. I ended up with an abysmal 1.042, 43% efficiency! checked with a refractometer and my hydrometer. The only thing I changed this brew day was my thermometer, and I...

Patersbier - Over hopped. Should I dump it?

It will definitely be more hoppy than intended ~46ibus instead of ~23ibus (according to beersmith). But I definitely don't understand why you would even consider dumping it... It'll just be different beer. Definitely not a bad thing. Just a learning experience, and maybe it will be awesome.

Funny things you've overheard about beer

So far i've tried NB Summer Helles, one from a super small start up on the frontrange of CO called Hall brewing Helles or something like that and weihestephaner original. NB's was definitely my least favorite. Ill have to keep an eye out for the ones you mentioned, Thanks!
