    steep time and temp

I cold steep frequently. Just set the pot on the stove, add water, a paint strainer bag and pour the grains in and let it steep over night. Next morning it's ready to go for brewing. When the water is added to the pot for boiling, just dunk the bag in the pot a few times to sparge it while the...

    Yeast still good?

See the info on resurrecting old yeast in the "Articles" section of this site. I'm in the process of reviving some top cropped 1469 that got a little old in the fridge. I too would hate to lose that jar of yeast!

    Free Carboy!

Luck you, Haree! My bro-in law gave me two 5 gal acid carboys which I use exclusively for secondary fermentation vessels on those occasions when a big brew requires it.:mug:

    Increasing alcohol in extract kits

I have added rice syrup solids in some of my previous batches to boost the ABV and it worked well for me.

Airlock activity for Bavarian Dopplebock at cold temps

I had an issue with one of my plastic Big Mouth Bubblers not sealing well. To remedy this, I took one of those styrofoam chinette plates and used the white circular part of the lid as a template and made a gasket that fit between it and the threaded blue ring. Problem solved. Cheers! :tank:

    20-Minute boil

I haven't tried that kit, but have done NB's Zoomin' Pale Ale kit a couple times with good results. You are right ... it takes longer to set up/clean up than to actually brew. I keep a supply of DME on hand to make quick house brews using just that method.:mug:

Whats your homebrew for St Pattys?

Irish Red is always a good choice .... pretty quick turnaround.

My Blowoff Tube is Sending Hops into the Sani Bucket

I too use a nylon mesh bag fashioned onto a DIY Hop Spider when adding hops to the boil. You would be amazed at how much "sludge" only one ounce of hops pellets can generate. I also use one of those mesh garment bags when dry hopping. It keeps a lot of gunk out of the trub which helps if you are...

2 month old yeast - starter?

I run into that problem with some of my strains because I have a pretty good variety. I usually use the older stuff to make a fresh starter just for safety's sake and not risk screwing up a 5 gal batch.

Found a computer. Stir plate help.

Biggest I've done is a 2000 ml starter. Initially, I had the plexiglass mounted flush and the weight caused the plexi to barely brush the magnet on the fan. That's when I added the O ring and nut spacer. A couple things you can do if yours touches ... 1. Use thicker plexiglass. 2. Use four...

Found a computer. Stir plate help.

Also use a neoprene O ring above the nut. Also, if you look carefully, you can see another hard drive magnet stuck to the corner of the case .... that's to use on my flask when pouring the starter out so the stir bar doesn't end up in 5 gal of wort! Cheers:mug::mug:
