To The New Brewer - Extract Or All Grain

Extract brewing tests your "likeness" to the hobby, so it's an important step. You have to learn to walk before you run. Eventually, if you like to walk, you will run. Same for all-grain :-)

    Grain storage

I just picked up some 6 gal food safe buckets with Gamma seals for $13.45 ea, which I think is a pretty good deal. It was $0.50ea cheaper to buy the bucket and lid separate, than their combo. Not sure how long the sale will last... http://beprepared.com/food-storage/storage-containers.html

    Keg Foam

I had a foam issue when I first got my kegerator. Turns out the thermostat didn't chill cold enough so I had to rewire it with a new controller. aka STC-1000. I also added a fan to recirculate the air around. Put a bottle of water in your kegerator, next to the keg. Once the water...

    Yeast Starter with Krausen

Well, once everything settled out in the starters the number of yeast cells in the Abbaye were much greater than the US-05 so both were pitched Saturday night. Then, yesterday I had to replace the airlock on the Abbaye yeast with a blow off tube! These Belgian yeasts are crazy fermenters...

    Yeast Starter with Krausen

So I made 2 starters last night for a split batch I plan on brewing tomorrow night. US-05 has good Kraussen so it looks good. Other starter Abbaye has none. Packet dated use by 5/2016. Both yeasts were bought at same time and stored in fridge, and otherwise treated the same. Should I be...

I read the review, but I also rx'd contradicting info from the vendor so, who to believe?

Then, even more reason to have the specifications listed on the webpage!

    tall boy kettles from nb

No specifications on the Northern Brewer website!? ... so being the engineer that I am in the market for a new 10G brew pot, I sent NB an email requesting construction and wall thickness information. NB response: "The Tall Boys are constructed with 304 stainless steel for which the main body...

    CO2 fills in Northern Virginia

Well, just called Roberts and a 5# exchange is $24.41. Rep said an exchange is an exchange, which is good since my tank is out of cert. This appears to be a good way to get a certified tank I can take elsewhere to refill cheaper next time ;-)

    CO2 fills in Northern Virginia

I'm looking closest to Fairfax, so I guess Roberts is my best bet... will inquire about pricing (I think I have a 7# tank?). Currently running on my backup tank! I last filled it at Scotty's in Alexandria, but that was when I lived close, and it was more convenience than anything else.

Hi everyone! another new guy from NoVA

Funny thing is when I got married, it was my wife's idea to throw a kegerator on our registry... low and behold, a group of friends bought it for us! I had to completely gut and replace everything except the compressor to make it worthy, but still much cheaper than buying brand new (damn...
