    Hops on a hill?

Hops don't like "wet feet", so growing on a hill is OK as long as there is enough water. The bigger concern is when you try to put a ladder up either to string them or drop them. Make sure you can figure out a way to do that safely.

Definitely clipping the first shoots next year. Here's why ...

Look up the term "bull shoots" in this forum and you'll find past discussions on this. Its a good idea to cut the first flush for a couple of reasons. 1. Those bull shoots are usually weaker than subsequent shoots and grow really quickly. So your internodes are farther apart...meaning...

Organic vs. chemical fertilizer for hops

Amen...from my youth: - Time to fill the manure spreader from the beef cattle barn and get it spread = 35 minutes/load. A 10 acre took all Saturday and part of Sunday for me and my brother, if there was enough BS to cover it. Work level...Shoveling BS all day with a pitchfork was not easy...

    Hop Pollination

I'm not a chemist, but I know the ASBC Methods of Analysis is on its 14th edition. I'm quite certain the method used today is not the same as in the 1970's. And as I stated before, there was a significant bias on that side of the Atlantic to show pollinated hops were better. Probably not. I...

    Hop Pollination

First, sorry I read "when" as "where". I would suggest you spend sometime reading this thread for your answers: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=397219 I also apologize if I offended. My question wasn't a stab at your intelligence, but a valid one based on typical questions...

    Hop Pollination

male haters...I won't even bring up the age of your research paper of the prevailing theories at the time and simply ask, where did you get your male? Is it a true male or a hermaphodite? The hermapodites are females that will sprout male when under stress but are often (not always) sterile...

    Hops Drying Concerns

I wouldn't worry too much. That's most likely the Farnesene evaporating away. Every have a "wet hopped" beer. They are often described as spicy but sometimes also called grassy. When the hops are thrown straight from the field into the kettle, all those oils are captured in the beer giving...

someone has built a picking-hops machine?

I'll have to go back and find my notes but its not that fast. Actually, variable speed is the best because they all pick different.

Question about sourcing Hop poles/posts for trellis system.

Unless you need really pretty poles, you can start with local tree cutting services and ask them if they know someone that deals in large volumes of debarked poles. I know a guy in WI that debarks a couple hundred trees every year for his hopyards and others. There also used to be an outfit...

    Fresh hops conservation?

If you don't dry them first, even the best vacuum sealer will not prevent them from turning to mush before arriving in brazil. Dry first, vacuum pack and you have a shot.

someone has built a picking-hops machine?

The one for sale on facebook is in the "Hop Growers Forum (Nationwide)" group. I don't know how to share the link directly to the post but it was put up on July 11th by Christoph Aaron. He's asking $9k. If nothing else, he has the pictures up as do many others. I'm also looking to see if we...

someone has built a picking-hops machine?

Plans...at this point we don't have plans we could really provide to anyone else that could be comprehended and since we don't build it any more, there's no point in cleaning them up. I can tell you there are at least 2 used units for sale out there. I saw one of the newest models on Facebook...

2 for 1, where to find used small scale hops processor..and search bar!?

On your second question, what are you looking for? A picker to purchase? A mobile unit to pick for you? There are some that do contract picking in CO and the upper midwest but for the most part, its to expensive. You are better off buying something or hiring hand pickers. For processing...

2 for 1, where to find used small scale hops processor..and search bar!?

To search...go back to the forum list of subject lines. [https://www.homebrewtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=92] Right above that to the right is something that say "Page 1 of 173..." Right below that is "search this forum"

My plants have hit maturatiy....now what

If it is 3 years old and has been properly cared for, that crown (root ball) will be massive and can handle a cut back. I don't know where you are at but now would be a good time to grab the 20 or so bines that should be popping out and hack them all off. When they grow back, train 3 or 4 and...
