    Suspicious Growth: Mold or Infection?

I'll check the consistency of the growth, and confirm the smell/taste when I get a chance. What'd'yall think, worth bottling? I recently poured 2 batches down the drain due to bacterial infection (no growth like this) introduced by old/dirty siphon tube. I'd like to avoid that hassle again if...

    Suspicious Growth: Mold or Infection?

Extract Pale Ale that got away from me. Traveling so much for work, its been 8 weeks and I haven't had time to deal with it... SWMBO said it smelled like rotten fruit. The bucket definitely didn't smell good, the sample tasted funky, hard to describe. I would guess mold, anybody familiar...

    Varying Hops Schedule for Blondes/Pales/IPAs

I now have a handful of bulk hops around, and would like some suggestions for varying my hops schedules using my on-hand stock. My most successful beers have been Centennial Blonde and Haus Pale Ale. I also like IPAs. I'm thinking simple varieties of those basic beers, with changing hops...

    Help Troubleshoot Infection

Just to add: I forgot to mention, at the LHBS the bottle was unchilled. Not sure if it would make it appear infected? Today I chilled one, and tried it. It didn't foam at all, is well-carbed, tasted kind of sweet and floral (wet hoppy), but doesn't have the off-flavor! I've had a few other...

    Help Troubleshoot Infection

I use a sponge to wipe things that have just come out of the beer and have stuff stuck on them: spoon, outside of auto-siphon/cane, wine thief, IC, bottling bucket. This is just after using them, and then eventually get rinsed w/ hot, dried and maybe soaked in Oxy before use. Or, just dried...

    Help Troubleshoot Infection

I've brewed 11 beers so far. All beers are extract + grains, partial-boils. My 2nd beer (kit pale) had an off-flavor that I never could really describe. Girlfriend said cardboard, her father said banana, I never really thought those fit, more like flat wet dog. It was drinkable but not good...

Adding DME after steeping but before boiling

I'd like to toss two things I've found to be a huge help in my late-DME addition quest: 1-gallon Pyrex Measuring Cup Large Whisk Weighing out DME into the measuring cup, pouring and whisking. A good whisk is key, and a stout handle on the measuring cup (with 2-3 lbs DME in it). It pours...

    Boil Yeast Nutrient?

Thanks for the replies. My yeast nutrient is repackaged by my LHBS so it doesn't have real instructions on the package (just tells how much per gallon to use). As I mentioned, I'm adding this to a stuck fermentation of lemonade, so the last 15 minutes of the boil doesn't apply this time...

    Boil Yeast Nutrient?

I looked all over, but can't find this. Is it necessary to boil things like yeast nutrient and other addatives? I'll be adding nutrient to stalled lemonade fermentation (ie - already started fermenting, only to 1.071). Thanks Aaron

    looking for a "girly-beer" recipe

As Yooper suggested, make her something she DOES like, so she can make you beer that YOU like. (When you make her hard lemonade/apfelwein/whatever, just pretend it takes 5 hours and a lot clean-up, so its a fair trade)

American Pale Ale Bee Cave Brewery Haus Pale Ale

I brewed this a while ago on all the great recommendations for a solid "House" Pale. I did a 3.5-gal boil, roughly doubled the hops (for partial boil), and did 75% late DME addition. Finally cracked one after almost 5 weeks in a bottle, and I must say, wow. Delicious, balanced, hoppy...

    Beer Fermentation Time Lapse Video

Cool idea to do this, and a very successful first attempt! I have recently made a variety of time lapse video for my work (though I don't work making videos, it was very DIY/hobby/cheapo-style). They are fun to do, and a bit tricky to practice and get all the variables tuned for a particular...

Is your BEER taking over your home?

(Assuming you don't have kids) You should point out that SHE is also taking up half the house.

Greedy Us, the Carboy is Oozing Apple Sludge

So, I finally bit the bullet. Armed with some sanitized butter knives, spoons, paper towels and an airlock, I dove in to clean up the lava flows of apple poop that had since crustified all over my carboy's overshirt. While there was far less ooze in the neck of the carboy than I expected...
